Chat with everyone in your vicinity

Apologies if this has been posted multiple bloody times, but jesus christ.
How come there is no chat just to talk to everyone in your general vicinity, this is pretty much essential to do anything group wise.
Cheers.

This has come up a lot but a surprising number of people (myself among them) are against it. Some would find it immersion breaking. I am in the other camp thinking back to every MMO I have ever played and how utterly useless global chat is. All I ever see is gold spammers, general spam and stuff in languages I can't read.

If they do add something (and I think they will) a lot of Commanders are just going to switch it off as it just doesn't fit Elite. Being able to use voice comms or ship-to-ship messages are all many want as it is more realistic.

I'm willing to bet a system wide chat will be enabled at some point in time, but only system wide and perhaps only when docked at a station. While there may be reasons against it, the role playing aspect and benefit of it could be enormous.

Can't agree more :)

Hey guys, this is kind of a general question so I've moved this to the general forum and given it a slightly more descriptive title.

For what it's worth, the developers have generally said they want to avoid any kind of broadcast chat. The game is about you and your ship lost amongst the vastness of space, which would be lessened if you kept getting interrupted by people talking to each other past you.

Once again agreed, I think the idea of global chat would lose the immersion of the game.

totally disagree with immersion breaking if the chat was implemented properly. As long as the option is there to turn chat off for those that feel that chat would break their immersion. I don't like the idea of galaxy wide chat but certainly system wide or at the very least station chat while docked.

Rubix

My experience of chat so far has amounted to;

  • Someone trying to chat while I'm in super cruise and paying attention to where I'm going - I'd have to slow down a lot to chat or I'll overshoot where I'm going, and as soon as I drop from super cruise they are lost as a contact as far as I am aware, which kinda kills the conversation.
  • Someone trying to chat while I'm in the process of docking - I'm not going to answer while hurtling at letter box surrounded by a billion tonnes of stuff harder than my ship, and by the time I get docked, they have usually gone.
  • Someone trying to chat while I'm in a fight - This is just not happening and again, by the time the fight is over, they have usually left.

Currently the chat system in game seems to make it difficult to chat without stopping whatever it is you're doing, unless what you're doing is hanging around a station waiting to chat.

except that braben has sold this as an emergent mmo.....with zero social features and group features even most modern singleplayer games beat easily
atm its a singleplayer with a huge number of fancy spacepaintings to looka t out of your cockpit,,,,,and thats all it is

I have the same expireience and its a shame. Right now floating around the station and talking to docking pilots is the best option :)

I would be up for adding this option for local system chat with the option of muting/ turning off. That way at least people have the option. Simple really.

This is a massively multiplayer universe simulation that thrives on communication and trade... It can't be expected to have features that let you communicate or trade with people.

Why not default it to the "alone in space" mode you mentioned earlier in the thread and have a separate selectable comms channel for general chat (be that station, system or galaxy) so, you know, we can.... communicate...

I don't see why this would be a problem.

The only time when i am near enough to another player for enough time to have a decent conversation, we are both far too busy flying circles around each other trying to blow the snot out of the other. Hardly a good communication system. :p

I could definitely see a broadcast system chat, but you need to buy a module on your ship for this. This would be a way to implement it. You want to use a broadcasting chat, you need the module to broadcast it. This would definitely not immersion breaking, because I'm sorry for the dev but, from the moment where it says its a multiplayer game, it's not just you and your ship. It's your ship and the other player around. if in the year 3300 we can't communicated between system or planet I have no faith in technology then.

Just to organise some "event" by player like, faction event, it would be nice, you would see more player actually playing together rather than just being npcs..

Becuas you know, in no way do radios ever work on channels that you could tune in to if you wanted to ... so lets make everyone play single player forever.

A compromise might be that when two Cmdr are in visual distance of each other you don't have to turn your ship around to scan enough to get their Cmdr name, which makes it easier to just say hi if you're passing, with the current comms interface. What stops me just going o/ sometimes is that I have to turn my nose in their direction first when I'm in the middle of lining up for docking, say.

Can't see why you shouldn't be able to chat while docked. That seems fairly realistic, your ship not being powerful enough to broadcast system wide or galaxy wide unless connected to the space station.
