This has come up a lot but a surprising number of people (myself among them) are against it. Some would find it immersion breaking. I am in the other camp thinking back to every MMO I have ever played and how utterly useless global chat is. All I ever see is gold spammers, general spam and stuff in languages I can't read.
If they do add something (and I think they will) a lot of Commanders are just going to switch it off as it just doesn't fit Elite. Being able to use voice comms or ship-to-ship messages are all many want as it is more realistic.
I'm all in. And I think you should be able to turn it off for people like Tiamat. Near-station chat is realistic and immersive. There are Russian spammers trying to sell you space potency meds in the year 3300 as well.
EDIT: Also I think you delude yourself. "Many" want the chat, and despite what you may think, we respect your right to turn it off.
