Chat with everyone in your vicinity

This has come up a lot but a surprising number of people (myself among them) are against it. Some would find it immersion breaking. I am in the other camp thinking back to every MMO I have ever played and how utterly useless global chat is. All I ever see is gold spammers, general spam and stuff in languages I can't read.

If they do add something (and I think they will) a lot of Commanders are just going to switch it off as it just doesn't fit Elite. Being able to use voice comms or ship-to-ship messages are all many want as it is more realistic.

I'm all in. And I think you should be able to turn it off for people like Tiamat. Near-station chat is realistic and immersive. There are Russian spammers trying to sell you space potency meds in the year 3300 as well.

EDIT: Also I think you delude yourself. "Many" want the chat, and despite what you may think, we respect your right to turn it off.

How exactly is that more realistic? You can already communicate any distance in real time, so I fail to see how a general broadcast system would be any less realistic than the current system.

I think instance wide broadcast chat is the minimum the game needs to be taken seriously as a multiplayer game. I dont really see who anyone can argue against it if its opt-in i.e. disabled by default.

I don't see why "local" chat wouldn't work. Everybody currently on your contacts list? Not an immersion breaker, much more communication possible.

Broadcast chat for each instance would better than what we have now. The biggest problem now is that I'm flying along and get a message from CMDR XXXX, I hit enter to return chat but its not targeted to the right/any user. So I then hit 2 for comms and it lists 3 cobra and 2 sidewinder. That's five possibles, it could be any of them I then start hitting 'G' to target each ship in turn to lock on to the CMDR's but I also have to go thru each NPC as well. There may be 20-30 ships flying about so don't want to go to fast or I might miss the CMD.....damn, overshot my station.....ok targeted a CMDR, turn to scan him.....POP low power fsd wake..... ***kit. Panel 1 target station and exit Supercruise.

Hey guys, this is kind of a general question so I've moved this to the general forum and given it a slightly more descriptive title.

For what it's worth, the developers have generally said they want to avoid any kind of broadcast chat. The game is about you and your ship lost amongst the vastness of space, which would be lessened if you kept getting interrupted by people talking to each other past you.

Well, have a CB radio in the ship you can switch on or off. People who want to chat can them who don't, won't. You see it with truckers, so that is not real? ;o)

Also it is your fault and your fault alone if you can't understand a language (and I don't see why it should bother you anyway).

How to Chat?

Hi everyone, I've been playing about three days now -- trying to learn how to do things. I've generally consulted this forum for help as I don't know any way to ask questions within the game. I've tagged my questions onto this thread, as it seems to be the most recent thread on the subject.

How do I chat with others in the game?

Is there a way to broadcast to all in my local area? I assume from this thread that there is not.

How do I chat with an individual pilot? Can I chat with him anywhere in the galaxy if I know his name? Does it have to be someone in my local area? If so, what do I click on to do that?

If someone chats with me, is there a quick way (such as /r in other games) to respond back?

Is typing chat and voice chat different? At this point I'm mostly asking about typing chat. Please enlighten me. I haven't seen any instructions as to how to do chat.

I have a lot of quick question to ask in-game -- or is that not allowed because it spoils the immersion?

The default chat key is "2". You can then select who you want to talk to, and talk to them. You can only talk to your friends, or people currently in your scan range. If somebody left your scan range and didn't change system/between normal and supercruise you can still talk to them if you talked to them before.
