Ships Cheap Mining Boat With Decent Range

I've escaped from npc-s with taxi hauler multiple times, it was all d-grade without shields or even chaff launcher. So it is possible... but very risky, yes... It is probably a good idea to add chaff/hsl too...
Also IMO viable mining ships begin from T6 and up. Even Cobra III is a bit too small. With current mechanics you need to have too much internals dedicated for specialized modules, and you need cargo space for limpets...
But yes, for a given price range it will work...

Been using this cobra IV build - halves cost if you d class the FSD. Was surprised how effective it as a entry level miner hunting for the 'P's'.

The thing about these small mining ships is there almost always one or two use ships. That build has 14 tonnes of space so even if you only hit an average of Palladium 2 mining trips and you'll be outfitting a Cobra.

It's a good enough build, personally I wouldn't bother with the Shield as it'll last about 2 seconds anyway. I know you don't bother with a prospector on small ships but it'll speed up filling the hold (and bins) or fit a disco scanner for the UC data.

You should use A-grade prospector, it is dirt cheap and prospector grade affects number of chunks you get from asteroid.

Good advice. I did a test only scanning UC data and mining after a clear save. Made it up to a Cobra. Hit one 40% Painite roid and because I had an A rated prospector returned with almost half a million in cargo over 400,000 from that one roid.

I really like small ships, I just don't find these cheapo miners all that interesting. For people who really tight on budget these may be the road into mining. For person with money that looks for something different...these are a bit weird. With such a small cargo you will waste more time getting to your mining destination than actually mining. Even if you will cherry pick every bit of ore.

I flew a shieldless Hauler for mining. Fact is, with only about 14t of total cargo, it's not that big of a loss in time or profits to loose one. I liked using it to scout out areas.

Beyond that, I really enjoyed the Adder though.
I put military bulkheads, still no shields, but with a gimballed small beam and medium torpedo tube along with the mining laser. I actually even took an npc Vulture out with it lol.
