Cheap Pimped-Out Ride or Expensive Plain Vanilla Ride

I think this decision is going to depend on a few factors?

1-How quickly I can increase my skill

2-How quickly I can earn credits

3-The state of play in the open servers

Depending on the cost, I might just max out the sidey and go for a few days worth of solid bounty hunting and trading/deliverys to rack up the credits, then I will go for a mid ranger and max it out for the foreseeable future.

My end game/ultimate ship would be the dolphin or beluga for passenger/tourism missions as once I become sufficient with plenty of credits and a top line ship, il then be an explorer and leave the bubble and all its issues behind. I will only return to populated areas to sell my data or drop off passengers

Sounds like a good plan to me.

I want a dolphin. It looks nice.
and I will run away from the bubble the second i'm out of tutorial and them i will fly around hear podcasts and look at stars until I get maybe a bit of money..
thought about maybe starting with spacemadness and getting to sagA in a winder?

if that does not net enough I will cry and then watch the Ai shoot bad dudes and pewpew a bit in...
then get my dolphin and back to looking at stars

For me I will go from a Goldwinder to an Adder making money from there, doing cargo runs and an occasional bounty, until I can get my Asp explorer.

You would be surprised what a fully kitted out Adder can do.... I made 5 mil quick in the pc version ED, I just wish I had the Cobra MKIV(Have made 32 mil doing passenger and cargo runs in a fully kitted CIV), to go between the Adder and Asp Explorer.

I am so going crazy waiting I have a 62 inch Super HD TV waiting on the immense beauty of exploring of the galaxy!

62", that's large man.

Me personally i want to be out in unknown territory in the first week or so, i have always said my go to ships will be sidewinder for goofing about and shenanigans, and my DBX will be purely business exploring and following leads about mysteries and aliens. then as i get flush with funds look at getting the imperial cutter and hope i can paint it bright hot pink by the time i buy it, misfit by name, drama queen by nature :p

When I first started on Xbox I explored and did missions until I could afford a Hauler, then upgraded to a Cobra Mk III from there. I'm still using it now, I can't seem to let it go! It was previously painted in "Vibrant Purple" but is now finished in "Tactical Ice". I think for PS4 I'm going to see how far I can upgrade the Sidewinder instead.

Gold winder to Hauler to Cobra. A rate the Cobra. Buy a Viper for bounty hunting and A rate that. Use Cobra and Viper to make enough for a Vulture and A rate that. Phase One complete

Same plan I have exactly.
Great minds think alike Snowbeard
I will get a Dolphin also so I can rake in passenger credits.

It's cool to see all the new CMDRs getting excited about starting the game!

I've done the zero-to-billions journey twice now, on 2 accounts. The first time round I was clueless and "wasted" a lot of money on trying out ships and figuring out what I liked and what the game offered.

But it wasn't really wasted, because I enjoyed every minute.

I was eager to get a better ship, because in my mind the starting ship was garbage (I mean, it has to be garbage if you get it for free, right?).

In fact the Sidewinder is a very capable and fun little ship. I still fly one around at times now, for a change of pace or just to enjoy it.

The second time I knew what I was doing, and spent my first 30 hours in the Sidey, until I could afford a Cobra Mk III and a couple upgrades. Then I spent the next 300+ hours in that ship, and eventually got a Python.

I had just as much fun the second time (and I'm still having fun, thousands of hours later).

My one piece of advice for folks who are starting the game is this: Do what you find fun, and don't get sucked into too much repetitive activity.

If you're getting bored with something, do something else for a while. It's easy to get into a rut, but that's on you. Avoid it at all costs, and you'll be happy for a very long time.

There is SO much to do in this game. Try it all, even if it doesn't sound like your cup of tea at first. The experience will be worth it.

Welcome to the galaxy, all of you. You're on the brink of an amazing experience!

Not watched all your vids, but really enjoyed the ones I have watched =]

What are the ships that, in your own opinion of course, you should not bother with?

Words of wisdom!

I have started a bucket list of things to do in game so I don't get fatigued with doing only one thing. Some don't appear to be that difficult, but something like the 65KLY club, that will require some planning and patience.

Every ship has something to love. I can't think of any that should be avoided per se. Depending on your funds and interests, you'll have lots of interesting choices to make. And that is what makes it fun. :)

Well, if you want the suggestion from a not-so-old PC CMDR: go for cheap and pimped over expensive vanilla every time - and never fly what you can't rebuy!

The vanilla ships are death traps, while a pimped Sidewinder can be a serious problem if you're looking into the wrong end of its railguns :D Problem is that, apart from the admittedly rather limited Sidey, there are no cheap multi purpose ships.

But that Sidey's good value for its money. What I did after a clear save in March:
- stick with the Sidey
- don't go for combat. You can do a little bounty hunting with support of the fuzz, i.e. follow the system security around in a RES, then scan and shoot what they are shooting. 15 (assisted) kills let you unlock Tod.
- do missions instead until you can upgrade the Sidey to at least A-rated FSD, fuel scoop and advanced discovery scanner. If you can squeeze in a SRV or a detailed surface scanner, the better
- make the trip to Maia, collect some Meta Alloys and pick up Soontil Relics on the way back. That trip should easily push your exploration rank high enough so that you can unlock Felicity (meta alloys) and Elvira (relics)
- with those two engineers unlocked, you can really start to upgrade your sidey - e.g. with the enhanced thrusters
- do some shooting, unlock Tod and upgrade the guns

Now you can get a ship that really is worth it. For example... You just have to flexible and switch modules on the fly (easy, since you can store high graded or upgraded modules and have them shipped to wherever you are), since the Sidey just has four slots. Now make some money to get a T-6, and unlock Selene Jean.

My sequence was Sidey -> T-6 (mining for Selene) -> Dolphin (which I'm currently using), with a Vulture on the side for some PvP action. If you want to go that way, the Dolphin can be a real money spinner once you get chummy enough with one or two minor factions in a tourist port.

Nice post, mate! Reading through what you wrote makes me realise I should really start to plan what I'm going to do. At this point I've no clue although I know bounty hunting and exploration are going to be my main roles.

In part, the same could be said about NMS, except, it a limited amount of things to possibly accomplish. Once done, it's pretty much the end of game. ED seemingly has an infinite list of possibilite to accomplish. Hence there's a lot of NMS players converting to ED. I'd concur it's due to the multiplayer feature ED has where as NMS is strickly an solo mode.
