Cheapest hardware to run ed while traveling

I'd really like to be able to play ed while traveling (obv while online) but don't really want to spend lots on something that would only get used occasionally. Most places I stay have a TV which I can connect to via hdmi so I figure I could get something with a low spec screen but that will still run ed even if not quite as detailed or smooth as my home pc.

Any ideas? I did wonder if a windows tablet might work rather than a laptop but the spec requirements typically refer to desktop devices rather than tablets with built in graphics, etc.

My 2 cents, I bought cheap (265€) HP laptop with Intel N3710 processor and AMD R5 M430 GPU for light 3d-modelling, but was surprised that Elite Dangerous runs on it too. Not very smooth, but quite playable if not looking for combat.

Raspberry pi!

Will have to look into a cheap laptop but I typically already carry my work one so would rather avoid carrying two of them. Has anyone got it running (acceptably) on a tablet?

Took my 2014 11" MacBook Air on holiday, and played ED "tolerably". Solo mode only note, due to both poor internet connections (wilds of Italy) and spec, but yeah, you can definitely scratch that itch on low spec, but very portable and light, hardware

Just an FYI, the whole Raspberry Pi thing was fake ;)

As for your specs I'm a Console scrub so I dunno, an xbox?

Would ED run on this ?

10.1" (25,65cm) Asus T101HA-GR030T WiFi / Bluetooth V4.1 128GB 340,-€

Only 4 gig memory, and it's shared with integrated graphics, I've tried running on a hp beatsaudio with 16gig of ram, it's playable but at absolute low settings, don't expect FPS above 20.

not to long ago there was a Cmdr that played it on a Raspberry i believe.. so there is that :p

The original Elite, as in the 84 version was run on a PI using an emulator, there are questions about this version being run on the PI 3, namely an April fools joke.

That was me and it was an April Fools joke. https://youtu.be/hoGMyyWpaR0

Recommended specs for Elite (taken a few seconds ago from the ED site) are:

OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i7-3770K Quad Core CPU or AMD FX 4350 Quad Core CPU
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 770 / AMD Radeon R9 280X or better
Network: Broadband Internet Connection
Hard Drive: 25 GB available space

So a laptop capable of running such specs would be:

Personally, I like Alienware as it's designed for gaming on the go:

Acer 5740G.

Lol

It's a 2011 laptop, with dedicated ATI (not AMD. ATI, it's that old!) M5650~ 512mb of ram.
4gb of ram, and 'stuff'.

Mine cost precisely nothing, except for 2 new batteries, a new WiFi card, and for it to be taken apart and cleaned, because my brother somehow got crap in it.

It'll play ED on lowest of low settings. At 0.5 supersampling, you can actually do everything.
Except read anything.

Lol

It will look something like this;

Come to think of it, you don't want that. :p

But any Laptop with half decent dedicated GPU will run ED fairly well.

Though it only works on April 1st...

I bought a gaming laptop for when I went abroad for a month. Didn't end up playing E: D once, as there were far more interesting things to do! Mine is i7 with GTX 860M, which works fine. E: D can actually run on quite modest hardware - it also runs on my ultrabook which is an i7 but only has the Intel HD graphics (that laptop is over five years old, too).

Well a ps4 is a good bit bigger and heavier than a laptop isn't it?

Thanks for the suggestions. Suspect a bargain laptop is probably the answer.

What kind of travelling? backpacking or work?

Not actually sure. Most likely though.

But they still both fit in a backpack. Lol

My potatoe 15.6" laptop weighs 2.3~Kg, and I believe is much larger than a PS4, but much slimmer (3~cm)
No idea on a PS4s dimensions and weight.

Laptop is more useful aswell. Lol

I travel extensively and use a surface book with an xbox controller. I can play at medium graphics mostly but go to low when on a planet surface. I’m sure there are better gaming laptops but you cannot beat the surface for portability and it is great on planes.
