Cheating? Surely not.

I'm relatively new here so I don't know enough to understand what is actually possible.

This evening I have been pestered by an invisible attacker in the conflict zone who kept firing until they took down my shields and began to inflict hull damage.

However, they were invisible on my scope and I don't know how a ship can remain invisible while firing with enough energy to pull down an Anaconda's shields (perhaps cannon-fire alone is capable of this?).

The hits appeared to be coming from above me on my 6 but I never got sight of a craft despite my best endeavours.

I ducked out temporarily and re-appeared a few minutes later to see a ship (on my scope this time) and in view as a bright dot of light in the distance flitting rapidly from left to right against the backdrop of space exactly as per the scope display and in perfect time with it.

The speed at which this traversal was occurring was way faster than any ship in the catalogue.

So, my instincts suggest to me that there are folks out there enjoying some unfair advantages which is less than sporting of them.

Anyone else had a similar issue in the conflict zone tonight?

Was the blip on your radar solid or a small hollow square? If it was solid, then it was an NPC and not a player, so it could be a positioning glitch caused by a bad network connection.

If the blip was hollow, it was another player and it could be a cheat. Or it could also be a network glitch. Kinda hard to tell sometimes, at this point in the Beta.

I had that once before, the sheild showing damage but nothing visible on the scope or against the backdrop of space.
I put it down to a glitch.

They were either running cold and you didn't notice or you were ghosted into someone else's instance but couldn't see them, a known bug.

It's a known bug. Players can be invisible to 1 person, but the other person can see / shoot / kill them. We have had it within our group.

Could be a player running cold too (which is not a cheat).

Just ignore this spoiler. lol
FYI, running cold (even at 0) doesn't completely remove you from the scanner. And deploying your hardpoints (no matter what your temperature) instantly causes you show up on the scanner.

Edit: Oh, boy. I hope my memory isn't already starting to go...

I still have to test 1.04 in a known multiple-PC environment - but are you sure deploying hard points makes you blip on the scanner?

I've not had that happen before in previous builds, unless I've missed something or not been taking notes properly.

I'll put 2 or 3 machines together this weekend and see what I can find.

Was I sure. Yes. But after you asked I had to check the "tapes." You can be completely "invisible" but it requires 0 temp with all systems off.

As for the hardpoints, it looks like you will at the very least show up as a vague target, even when you are cold enough to go completely "invisible."

Granted, these videos are from an older version of the game.

Testing Stealth & Heat Mechanics Part 1

Testing Stealth & Heat Mechanics Part 2

But to the OP, the game is still in development. It seems to me the earlier builds were testing really basic game mechanics and systems. With SB1 testing a more fleshed out trading mechanic. I'm sure future builds will be focusing on other "careers"/systems in the game so the stealth mechanics should get their fair shake before the game goes gold.

more likely a bug, i always when see my shields flickering and no warning message about being attacked just SC out and back in, because that's just a regular guy who i cannot see and he shoots at me, i couple times were "that" guy myself, but always when i made couple shots (just one ring down from enemy shields) and didn't see reaction i was expecting i just leave them alone, there is no fun in killing someone who can't see you.

A while ago, I gave a fellow trader - who lost his property - a jump start. We agreed to meet at Freeport to transfer some canisters. He mails me he is there. I enter, he is nowhere to be seen. I log out, and re-enter, I can see him, he sees me.

After the 3 canister, poof, he goes up in thin air and messages me I went up in thin air, so I log out again and re-enter. He message me he is right in front of me, while I can't see him. So I drop a canister, after 10 seconds, it disappears. I dropped 13 canisters in total, after which he tells me his hull is full. I never saw him, but knew he was there because the canisters vanished.

So if this can happen, I can imagine someone shooting you without you seeing him, without the use of cheats/hacks (god I hate these words) can happen as well.

Known bug with the invisible attacker.

It was happening with my group last night while we were playing around, dogfighting. We wanted to go 2 vs. 2 ('Conda & Viper vs. 'Conda & Viper), but the invis thing kept plaguing us, so we didn't try it. Too bad... that would be a heck of a fight!
