Newcomer / Intro Check your surroundings before flying off!

How do I look up? Is there a way without turning the ship?

Usually I just strafe up and then accelerate forward towards the exit while retracting my landing gear.

One time, someone was above me and I rammed him.

If you have a POV pad on your joystick you can use that. With mouse and keyboard, I'm not so sure though on the keys to change the views. Try checking the settings and mapping the buttons there!

Thanks..I will check that.

I have a gamepad, but all axis are mapped (in fact, I'm short one). Would be nice to look around by mouse.

I did something similar by trying to reverse inside a station when I missed my pad. Scary moment!

I wish there was a rear view mirror module as well! So many times I did a "fender bender" on my ship because I was backing out too fast as well

I've had a number of near misses but not like those. I am always very careful in the bigger docks and only accelerate forwards to avoid collisions with superstructures like that. I have almost collided on the way out of a station though as I hadn't checked the radar and the incoming ship was almost dark. Both a T9 and T7 have done this to me, appearing from below my dashboard and looming in to view. :D

I think the keyword there is: careful

But yeah I think I should learn also to check my radar as well to watch out for incoming ships! Never thought about that! My blood pressure thanks you!

If you are on one of the pads at the far end of the bay it is also possible to hit the centre pylon thing if you go straight up. Best to put some forward speed on at the same time.

Thanks for the advise! It's actually what I do now after this mishap!

Not just that, never ever dock with reverse thrust engaged...

...it can lead to a pant-soiling few seconds when you take off.

I just go up just enough to clear forward structure and boost straight ahead with throttle set to max. Once the boost drops I then align to my destination as I've cleared all structure and traffic. Careless/impatience just gets you killed in this game.

In stations, always watch your radar as you launch. I go straight up till I align with the exit then move forward. Once I clear the exit, I pick a vector clear of nearby traffic and boost away.

Landing or taking off I always have my power to shields set to max.

When watching radar, look for player ships (hollow icons). Players do dumb things that can get you killed when entering or leaving a station. It's better to let them enter or leave first then risk a ship full of cargo. Some numb nuts stuck in the entrance or coming into the station at high speed can ruin you day.

In general, remember you are flying a helicopter not an airplane. You can move in any direction. Fly safe!
