Chieftain Feels Excessively Drifty

Is it just me, or does the chieftain feel excessively drifty? It feels more like it did in the early betas. Am I just off my flying today, or does it feel super floaty to you, too?

Seems to struggle to adjust its vector after turning, slides into reverse often, and takes ages to get going forward again if it does.

Yes, at least in beta for me. Supercruise maneuverability seemed too slow too, at least for my tastes for a ship that is supposed to be more maneuverable.

Haven't tested it out in 3.0 live yet though. Still on my way back from an exploration trek.

...

Edit: I see you mean compared to the betas and now. Never mind then. I'll just note that it seemed rather drifty to me in the betas anyway.

I don't mind sliding around so much as long as I can get the ship turned and pointed fast enough.

I haven't found too much drift in mine. Admittedly I don't do the DD5 thing, but mine runs pretty straight right now. I do notice that the aChief doesn't respond well to Boost Turns. That's when I get out of position, and all drifty. Could that be the issue?

If you 6A the power distributor, you can almost give it an e-brake drift feel with the boost coming back so quick. Feels a lot like a fighter bay craft.

Was going to make a bit of a rally comparison myself. In space it makes enough sense to me, relatively speaking. Just for fun, I'm kind of surprised I don't do Flight Assist off more often, but then I'm kind of lazy too. ;)

Anyway, it's a bit of a tangent from the OP's question.

Loving that. This ship has the potential to become the successor of my beloved Dropship... sorry Dropship. ;(

Yeh, I might as well throw my 2c in on this.

I didn't play beta, but I followed forum comments on it pretty faithfully, so I was expecting it to be drifty. I guess it depends what you normally fly. As a majority FAS pilot, after engineering the thrusters (140% and the 10% optimal mass bonus), I find the Chieftain between the FDL and FAS in terms of driftiness. In other words, pretty much where I expect it to be and not 'particularly' drifty. I Was expecting worse based on coments.

I was also very impressed with how quickly it changes direction forward/reverse and how it keeps its pitch rate at pretty much any speed. FA off as you come around 180 if you want to avoid that standing still nonsense while your thrusters catch up.

Yes, feels like beta 1 version but I'm not 100% sure about that. Lateral and vertical thrusters seem not responding the same way as beta 3, but it was 3 weeks ago...

I wish frontier would stop gimping acceleration si much. High turn rates but poor acceleration is how you get turrets in space. They went through all the trouble to build a WWII dogfighting feel for their fight model, then make ships better and better at turning without without actually changing their fight vector.

Well, for full disclosure I didn’t even undock it until it was fully A rated, but mine flies very straight and makes some nice tight boost turns. Feels solid. Unlike the hauler that always felt like it was kind of wiggling around on an icy road or something.

it drifts but the laterals helps moderately to change direction, not as bad as during beta.

I can't be 100% sure tho because its not fully engineered yet (only jump range and dirty for now), we'll see with 100t more armor on it if it is really that bad

How are you engineered, and how are you flying it (FA-On vs Off)?

The full G5 Dirty Drive upgrade will help a lot with the Laterals and Verticals, plus you get a 530+ Boost top end which lasts for a decent amount of time.

The ship still drifts though, but I am starting to learn to use it to my advantage. I recommend going down to a planet and practice your turns about 300m off the surface. This is the best way to observe how much drift is actually taking place.

I was reading about the drift and that's not been my experience. I boost up tp 510 or so with all my hull plating weighing me down, and the ship is extremely responsive. It bleeds excess velocity quickly and I have been extremely reckless on planets and in docking bays. I think your experience varies depending on what ship you come from, I usually flying my Corvette or FDL in PvE, occasionally hopping into my DBS (recently I have flown it almost all the time actually). The DBS has always felt like an outlier though, given the Chieftan's medium size I think it moves very well. Too well, actually.

I am talking about it with DD5 tho, it acts like the beta 1 version. Did a few quick fights with sdc fellows in the end of the beta and i think it was less drifty then. Boost doesn't bleed as much as beta 3...

Is hat I loved about the ship in Beta, I though they had toned it down for release. Gave the ship a unique feel, still haven't bought one on my live account.
