Seeing as Halo blatantly lifted it from the movie Aliens (The 2nd movie) and Elite likes to lift things from Aliens I would say it is more inspired from there instead of Halo.

Side note though both of those ships are able to drop large vehicles so that is promising.

Anything labelled as a "dropship" in a sci-fi setting has tended to look vaguely like these since way before Halo existed. Slap some appropriate terms into a Google image search and you will see page after page of them from numerous different franchises.

The Chieftain appears not to have made that mistake ,and the propulsors are out on pods.

They do have similarities, however, but form follows function

Yeah, Halo isn't the first, or only form of media with this type of design.

That's from Aliens. If you do a search for Drop ship Designs and specify images, you'll see hundreds of designs with pretty much the same basic layout.

The Pelican is a much smaller ship. I love the Chieftain's design, bodes very well for any other future Alliance ships. Hopefully there is an Alliance Explorer in the cards!
