Whoa, that's a HUGE step. Where does the article say that? A commercial(profitable) reactor is many years away (AFAIK).
"The eventual goal is to get a 1,000-second plasma reaction, after which the team will switch to new hardware with the intent of moving to a full working fusion reactor."

Pretty straight forward. They're hardly going to get it working then shelve the project after only making one unit. I suspect ten to twenty years to roll out production models assuming all technical issues are solved.
