Choosing a faction at the start of game, or even having one chosen for you?

When I started this game the whole faction thing didn't really make sense.
A lot of disparate factions all touting for my support. So far I've not allied myself with any.
Wouldn't it make more sense to prompt at CMDR creation what faction you want to allie with or even have once chosen for you (based on some metric to even out the player base) ?
Then you have a vested interest in one, you have a goal. Sure you could defect but at least you have a starting point.

How does it make sense to ask you to ally with a faction, when you don't understand them at the beginning?

And I can def see probs just being assigned one.

I think you need time to play, to get used to the various factions, before you commit...

Or indeed, don't...I am allied to both the Alliance and the Feds, and Friendly with the Empire :)

Not everyone wants to support one faction. Many people don't have vested intersted in factions, because there's no faction info in-game. ED needs an accessible Codex with faction lore and history.

I don't think doing this would be right, and what would ''choosing a faction'' even entail?

You don't have to support your faction but to have one at the start of gameplay gives you something to aim for, if you desire.

What.!

What about freedom of choice, not to be allied to any. One reason I play ELITE is because of that freedom and I'm not forced into a direction or path I don't want.

Thank you.

I'm an independent contractor, although I do have Federal tendencies. I never want to declare any specific allegiance.

That weird thing you have to get your ead round with E : D compared to pretty much every other game. Nothing ultimately has any point. Unless you come at everything from the perspective that every action/choice inherently has it's own self fulfilling purpose, that's the only way you're going to muster any kind of attachment to anything. This game is utterly devoid of offering any kind of sentiment to lure you in. Apparently you're supposed to "use your imagination"... Sad really. I read books when I want to use my imagination, I kind of prefer interactive virtual worlds to give me a little more to go on. But you can't win 'em all I guess.
