Choosing a Faction

I've been puttering around in Federation space long enough to now have an invite to Sol.

I'm debating whether or not to go there because I'm afraid that once I do I'll receive some commission or something that will mark me as an enemy to the Empire. I haven't decided yet whether or not I want to advance in either of these and just wondering...
1) is there a point at which you receive a rank and there is no turning back advancing in a faction?
2) once you are affiliated (let's say with Federation) can you still buy Imperial ships? ...and vice-versa?

I'll be honest....factions in the current state of the game: mean nothing.

you can be allied with all of them at once. Your alliance with one doesnt affect the others.

You can rank up with all of the big three and at the moment get any ships from imperial and federation. Being friends with one doesn't make you enemies with any of the others. Michael did state that eventually they wanted to make you choose which one you rank up in but not at the moment. Actually wondering if the Alliance the red headed stepchild will be getting anything soon.

I have a feeling the Alliance is intended to be the least attractive faction materially, because they're the most attractive faction ideologically. If the Alliance came with feelgood factor and powerful ships, everyone would play them.

Im building a pretty sizable bounty from general murder and mayhem in fed space (come get it you wont!) I simply decided that i wasnt prepared to pay it off for the federation which meant to trade and PVE safely i had to stick to imp space where anyone trying to get that bounty from me would become wanted themselves. so in that respect iv been forced to pick a side

I had felt a disturbance in the force... must've been your deadly presence in the galaxy. It was such a safe and happy place prior to your arrival.

Edit: wait, no... I just had to pee. all good now!

You raise a valid point though, thanks for contributing!
