General / Off-Topic Christmas and New Year celebrations should be canceled this year ?

The Christmas and New Year celebrations should be canceled this year for fear that these celebrations will cause a new resurgence of the Covid-19, according to Julien Lenglet, hematologist and crisis medical director of the private hospital of Antony in the Paris region.

"There is a risk that Christmas and New Year celebrations will potentially lead to a giant national cluster, intergenerational and at the origin of a potential third wave of Covid-19" say the man.

Of course this question is addressed (in this forum) to all the countries in the world which celebrate these traditional celebrations.

If trendlines hold, our population will be disease free by December. Already having zero case days.

Conditions in winter countries may be quite dire by then. Aggressive measures are overdue, and should have been applied much earlier to salvage the festivals later.

Trying to copy what works at the Equator might not be enough for the conditions at higher latitudes. I cannot predict the shape of the graph past the end of the year with any confidence. But we know what the models suggest.

Well, we've been without contact of friends and family since early October, the mini-lockdown is supposed to end Nov 30th.
No gatherings of any kind.
There is no crushing hospital waits. Gov't using arbitrary numbers of positive results, not mortality, or hospital admittance, just positive cases to force these lockdowns.
Guess, what? We're fed up, and will not obey if the Gov't tried to extend past 30th.
There are many that feel as we do.

I am down here in Cornwall UK, most of family are up country, would've been nice to have my elderly mother here...not going to put her at risk. Just me, wife and daughter. A three bird roast, a log fire and....I hope....a new VR headset. Thats christmas in Elite Dangerous, isolating amonst the stars.
Stay safe folks.

Put on hold yes, but not cancelled. Covid has taken too much already. At least have a chance to get something back safely.

Recover what ?

Kids today are spoiled kids. They have everything and gifts all year round.

The parents ? They eat as Pac-Man all year round.

The majority are overweight and happy with themselves.

These Christmas celebrations have for years been diverted from their real meaning which is a religious feast to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in simplicity and modesty.

A lost Christmas wouldn't be a drama.

In France, one in two people do not intend to spend Christmas with their family (if it is authorized) and will not buy toys in stores (but surely online) for fear of contamination.

Guess it pays that most of my friends and family are either dead or across the planet. I say this as a matter of fact and I hate social gatherings :)
Covid or not nothing much will change for me.

The main thing is to be well in our personal situation.

No need to force ourself to do things that oppress us.
