City Lights on Earth

Is it me, or are the city lights on Earth (in the Sol system lol), randomly placed? They don't seem to be in the correct places.

I was in Sol this morning and decided to have a close look at the UK. It was sunset there (why isn't the clock correct?) and I could see the lights plus the land in the twilight. There was hardly any lights in the London area and quite a few more in Scotland.

Maybe London got flooded by global warming/sea level rise?

There seems to be a bright light over Cambridge/Frontier Developments HQ. :D

It's 3300, it's a wonder the atmosphere is still see-through on earth, nevermind the cities.

A lot changes in a thousand years, I'd find it pretty lame if they slapped on a google image of 'night time earth' and changed nothing.

If you fly close enough it looks like Kent and a lot of the surrounding south east is below sea level, I remember finding a thread about it here on the forums somewhere when I first noticed it.

Best thing that could have happened to Sheppey really.

Mmm, I was complaining about the low resolution textures for the planets and also I talked about earth. I really thought it would be something like the star wars planet coruscant, but instead the end result on earth just looks uninspired and lazy.

Actually there is story about this.

There was a war on earth hundreds of years ago also there was a virus outbreak. Afterwards everyone made world peace and started exploring space and they looked after the planet. Earth essentially is totally different now, different cities, more green area's much more nature etc, its a holiday destination now haha.

Yeah, there was a Gazetteer packaged with FE2 that explained what happened on earth:

Steeped in history, the Earth has suffered many adversities before becoming the resort that it is today. Humanity began here and documented accounts tell of three planet-bound wars, the last one in 2040 almost bringing extinction due to the loss of life and environmental damage. For these reasons the landscape has changed beyond all recognition since then, mainly due to devastation and depopulation of nearly all the cities and towns. The final insult was a viral pandemic, for which no cure was found and many perished who were not resistant to it.As the world was rebuilt corporations became more influential and the balance of power went in their favour. After the war, fierce competition between them made it possible for space to be conquered whereas previously, that was seen as unimportant and exploration budgets were cut.
As extra-terrestrial settlements were established industry was moved off the Earth along with many people. An intensive environmental rescue program saved the planet and it again became the beautiful place it once was. It became both a very up-market tourist destination and the Federation capital with only the extremely rich being able to live there. Many native extra-terrestrials aspire to visit their roots and save up for many years just to be able to say they have been to their ancestors' birthplace.

I suspect they will make some changes when we get landings on planets with atmosphere+life.

I live in Hungary and checked it out a few weeks ago. It was dark....no surprise there...
