Civil wars pointless?

Ok usually I just do a bit of bounty hunting around nav points. But I happened to stumbled across a system with a civil war so I thought I would go and take out some ships. But I noticed that you don't get any bounties and they don't get awarded to your kill ratio. I thought if I killed some ships for one faction they would pay me when I docked at one of their stations, but nothing. What am I missing?

You need to select a faction to fight for under functions in the right hand panel of your ship.
