I've excitedly just discovered a large list of ED clans that folks can join!!
Look here: https://inara.cz/wings/
They're called 'wings', but some have hundreds of members and are really clans (wings are really just a group of up to 4 players co-op'ing in-game).
So... wouldn't it be GREAT to be able to have a clan tag preceding our names (like in Battlefield 1, for example). Such as, [TPF] MyName (where "[TPF]" is the clan name example).
Screen/functons needed:
1) Create/Read/Update/Delete (CRUD) functions - for of clan ownership and folks wanting to start/manage a clan.
2) Create/Read/Update/Delete (CRUD) functions - for of clan membership and folks wanting to join/manage clans they are members of (say a maximum of 10 clan memberships per player, like Battlefield 1).
Here is YouTube demo of how clans is implemented in Battlefield 1. ED could use a similar model.

Wouldn't that be awesome?!!
It would encourage folks winging up (safety in numbers!), and playing in Open Play, which is always a good thing IMO. :-D
