Hello! Now, we don't know alot about Elite Dangerous, but what we DO know is that there will be multiplayer. Where there is multiplayer, there are groups of folks banding together to work towards a common goal. In EVE they are known as Corps or corporations. In Planetside 2 they are outfits. In Counter Strike they are known as Clans.

Regardless of the fact that Elite may not support clan tags (at least I havn't heard anything.) should there be a forum for individual clan recruitment threads? All multiplayer games have groups of folks in clans who find each other via the forums or in game. Should we push for this? Or do you guys feel it is too soon? Or perhaps you don't like the idea of clans in Elite?

Do you folks feel that Frontier should open up a small sub-forum for Elite Dangerous Clans?

Oh, the forum should be a section on clans.
But, please, not this horrible design board!

At a minimum, the forum should be stretched in width, and be created in the style of holographic elements of the game.

In Myst Online they are called Guilds.

You haven't heard Frontier use the word "Clans", but they have said NO GUILDS.
So the answer to your question about whether this forum should have a Guilds / Clans / whatever you call it ... section ... is ... No.

Now, as you say, people WILL play in groups, and if they want to set up their own forums / chat groups / teamspeak / whatever ... Frontier can't exactly stop them.

Oh, I was completely unaware that FD said that.

Quite baffling actually. I mean a simple text guild tag makes alot of sense.

I can't imagine why FD is going down that route when Elite Dangerous is so multiplayer centered.

I'm really confused. :S

Well E: D will have groups.
But they are arbitrarily defined by each individual so they can change on the fly.

TBH. We all see to be one giant 'clan' here on the forum :p

I really wish that we won't see clans/guilds/corporations, to be honest. I really don't want to see [BBQsex]XxXSepirothXxX or [deathshadows]Johnny flying around...

Also, isn't this way too early to start recruitment/guild-up threads? I don't really see any point of a corp forum section...

Only because very few gamers know about Elite Dangerous. Most, if not ALL of the folks on these forums are. Once the game launches as is touted as an 'open-ended space sim' it will draw in alot of new faces who have never heard of Elite. Not to mention those who don't follow game development.

I think Elite Dangerous is going to draw in a bunch of new faces, but I guess we will see.

*EDIT*

You are going to see those names anyway! xxxyolo420swagxxx and all his freinds will join regardless :p

I'm not a big fan of clans - for once I'd like co-op missions and friends to be based on actually meeting people in the game rather than who can grab the most people from Digg.

You are right, personally I hope I can just switch off player names and just display ship Id's ;)
I'm reminded of the time I booted up Star Wars Galaxies way back in the day and promptly ran into Spydorrman92 or something similarly stupid like that. Haven't played an MMO since.

Yup.

So for those of you who may be worrying that after looking at the results we’re going to make Eve Online version 2, please don’t, because we’re not. Eve is a wonderful game with a focused remit concerning player versus player action, and kudos to them for making a kick-ass game. But as far as we’re concerned, Elite: Dangerous must provide an equally compelling single player experience as multiplayer.

I think that that means no.

In a clan, there is always a leader. I wonder if there are many players here who are willing of having a leader and to obey. So, yes, why not a sub forum for clans? But it risks be fairly empty. There will be group dynamics as has already been said, but they will be transformed in clans ? A sub forum would allow, spy on them, to know their intentions. There will anyway of clans. As this father of a family who has said he will play, and will move with family in the game. As a clan ...

Although there won't be clans/guilds etc, the Alliance feature will allow players to form a permanent (majority rules) party within the ALL group... whether that allows any kind of personal tag will be debatable and what kind of player limitation is currently unknown.

I like the idea, but hope they change the name as it could be confused with the Alliance Faction?

As for a special sub forum for Alliances, I would like to see that...

A sub forum would allow, spy on them, to know their intentions.

Usually, the clan (an alliance, a team, a corporation, and so on) create their own forum for free (or paid) hosting, where they can close the sensitive information from prying eyes.
In this case, the branch clan forum turns into a spam advertising, which painted the benefits of the clan.

I assume that they want to make the game as immersive as possible, and seeing clan tags around is very immersion breaking. At least I hope you cannot edit your commander name to show such things.

However, it would be a very good use for the ship decals. Just like pirates used to carry customised flags on their ships back in the day (each captain designing their own), you could have pirate clans adorning their ships with the same pirate decal.

Still I hope that the clan-based gameplay will not take Elite4 over completely. The spirit of the game has always been about lone traders finding their fortune in the vast galaxy.

Hmm.

The spirit of the game has always been about lone traders finding their fortune in the vast galaxy.

Sometimes even I forget this. Perhaps I wasn't really seeing what FD envisioned in Elite multiplayer. I'm so used to normal commercial game multiplayer, that it never even occurred to me that FD might be aiming for something a bit different. I suppose we shall see when the game launches.
