You are right, personally I hope I can just switch off player names and just display ship Id's ;)

I actually think that's the way the game should work, and would solve some hotly debated issues. It's also a lot more realistic. When I drive around (unless I specifically identify my friends lime green 87 Camaro with a dent in the side and a bent aerial) I don't go around saying "Hey! There's Bob Wilcox!". I don't buy the argument that it makes the game less social either, someone wanting to be social can just identify themselves as a player on approach.

Although there won't be clans/guilds etc, the Alliance feature will allow players to form a permanent (majority rules) party within the ALL group

Where did it say that Alliances were permanent? For some reason I got the impression that once everyone left/logged off they were ended. :S

In the Groups post in the archive it says you can only be in one at a time - but you can leave - or be kicked out.

So it isn't permanent.

Yes, but it sounded like breakpoint was suggesting alliances survived everyone logging out, etc, and I don't recall any mention of that.

Usually, the clan (an alliance, a team, a corporation, and so on) create their own forum for free (or paid) hosting, where they can close the sensitive information from prying eyes.
In this case, the branch clan forum turns into a spam advertising, which painted the benefits of the clan.

Are you sure?

I think it [Clans] may happen naturally, but I'm not keen on the idea of it being formalized in any way within the game.

I like the FD's implementation of groups

Did you mean Alliance ?

FD's implementation of groups excludes you from the Galaxy so whilst you are playing with your friends no one else can see you.

Forming an Alliance means you can go around the galaxy as a (for want of a better word) squadron and still see people.

The only thing you won't have is an ability to identify yourself as being a member of said Alliance unless FD allow a tag of some description to your name. We shall see what they do though.

I was talking about clans (which is the same thing in my view).

Perhaps its not a group, but I thought you had the ability to band/group together (without necessarily excluding other players if you choose) and members of this band/group have their reputation affected by the actions of the other members.

In this way you can link to each other to hyperspace together to the same location (for example)

Talk of clans, alliances etc is a bit too evocative of EVE for my liking, but I suppose it does not necessarily have to be a bad thing. We shall see.

Ah right - same thing then yes.

Alliance is synonymous for Clans I guess and it is a bit similar to EVE ... I was hoping for "Corporations" personally but it is what it is :)

Well I guess that's hopeful thinking, if you have to restart an Alliance on each log in then it would become a pointless feature (re-inviting etc), especially considering that players might log off for 30 minutes to grab some food or have a d/c... what a pain.

I get that clans/guilds are not what everyone want, but I think that there should be at least one feature that keeps a party together in a semi-permanent sense (until kicked or you quit).

When you relog, you automatically enter a instance with fellow Alliance members, then if you move away you would move into instances without them or decide to travel together.

Maybe FD could give us an idea of how Alliances will work in this matter.

Well, I guess because they said they'd look at clans in the future I saw alliances just as temporary groups, such as you get in MMOs. You know, a bunch of people get together in a particular place to do a certain deed or something. So I don't see them as pointless at all, but they don't seem robust enough to use as a clan mechanism.

As you say, we'd need FD to clarify a little.

Edit: Also, given that alliances enable people to stick together when it comes to instances, this would seem to have a maximum limit of 32. If FD don't want big alliances "owning" an instance then this limit may, in fact, be much lower... maybe even 16.

Give it a couple of years. The Waze mobile phone app already lets you do this to a limited degree, albeit looking at a screen rather than a HUD. But they've just been bought by Google who are doing insane things with vehicle automation and in-car and inter-car networking.

I suspect we're still quite some way away from a world like that of Daniel Suarez' Daemon, where individuals can see augmented reality tags on other people just by looking at them (although Google Glass is certainly a step in that direction). But for HUDs in vehicles it's a different story. The technology exists today, and it's surely only a matter of time before its cost is driven down to the point where every new vehicle has it.

I wouldn't want my personal info splashed around for everyone to see, though I'm not sure how many people share my opinion in this facebook era.
