Clarity sought on - uh - "mode mixing?"

I was in on discord yesterday during the EU launch and was trying to follow the fracas as best I could. I kept running across several CMDR's who swore that they were in Solo and were killed by another CMDR. And then I read someone saying that due to the high volume of traffic or server load, or something, that all of the modes were mushed into one. Is that true? If so, how does that work? I'm a technology neophyte, so keep it simple, Susan.

That doesn't seem feasible if I'm honest, mainly because FD would have wished that everybody would go into solo, so taking it away would seem to be either an unintended accident, bug, or sheer lunacy. :) I'm highly technical and I can assure there's no glitch 'known to us technical types' that would cause metcode to mash different game modes together. I don't preclude that possibility, but it either happened or it didn't and nobody on the forum will be able to explain it for you if it did. :)

I though mode confusion was reported at the Gnosis 'event' as well, similar large scale event. May be a thing, or it may be that people are easily confused <shrug>

Now, IIRC there have been events that take place in Open only because they are 'live'.

Like the Salami event where people lost their minds over some book character or something.

You couldn't participate in Solo, because it didn't happen in solo.

No idea if the event you are referring to was that kind of thing, but but might explain why some folks would be confused. Maybe.

No it wasn't

It's unlikely but possible there was a bug that caused this behavior - but much more likely it was human error by clicking the wrong start button.

Source - fixed many a bug, fixed/made many a human error

After visiting WP2 last night I'm now more convinced it is a mix of people being easily confused and FUD from the PvP community - the chat was full of people trying to convince others that they were already in Open (because of the shared chat), and that this was caused by FDev instancing woes. I guess the idea is the the clueless will log into Open next time (as they didn't get attacked last time).

meanwhile I stayed in the PG and wasn't attacked. I guess they're trying the same tactic of spreading FUD elsewhere - tricksy fellows those PvPers :)

ps. Was also amusing the players who didn't know how to find their current mode ... maybe they need that lesson ...

Jesus, that reeks of desperation from the Ganking community: "Oh, they don't wanna play with us? We will trick them into doing it..."

I was in Solo. I purposely clicked Solo as was sorting out my binds and trying to get VA work (VA failed at everything) and there were comments from Cmdr's who were in Solo, Open and PG.

That is normal, system chat is now cross mode.

I've heard occasional mentions of this happening in extremely busy systems - once a very long time ago when Quince was the goldrush, at the Gnosis, at the first Void Opal goldrush before people realised there were hundreds of suitable systems, and then this weekend. The first two of those of course pre-date the system-wide multi-mode chat.

The most obvious explanation is user error, of course.

Still, the connection between the places it's been reported does suggest another possibility - we know that the modes are basically just an instancing filter, so what if there's a maximum number of instances per location or per system [1]? A really high number, so for the first few years of the game even big group events didn't get close to it, but at some point it still gets hit and then Solo players start getting stuffed into existing instances because it literally can't create more.

[1] Whether an actual coded-in one, or a consequence of increasing load on the instancing servers.

I think people get confused because system chat is now”global”, meaning independent of mode you are in, so they see messages from people in open, even from gankers etc.

OP specifically cites people saying on a discord that they were killed in solo by hollow squares.

Yes, which can still be explained by 'they were confused'. Just because someone posts a second hand 'X said Y on discord' comment, that does not make it true.

Is there any video? That's really what it would take to conclusively identify it.

A video that included an options key press (or whatever PC equivalent is) that showed mode, and later on a hollow square.

Human error is so possible here. Just today I went into solo instead of open accidentally to try to engage a pre-arranged 1v1, and took at least 60 seconds to realize I left my brain in the jar. And I'm a dirty pirate (being called a ganker in another thread RN ugh don't even get me started on that nonsense ugh ugh ugh) who should know better

60 seconds is more than enough time for a rapid murderhobo to do their thing.

this sounds interesting.

i mean, i remember that short after release, i had opened a multicrew session to see if FDEV fixed the UI issues on the right side panels in Multicrew

suddenly i got the telepresence message of someone joining.
which was kinda shocking, since i was in my own private group for this test - and those joining haven't been in my group.

Many had to relog like 30 times because the servers were overloaded. It’s easy to select the wrong mode,, thinking they were in solo but weren’t.

yes this IS a thing, as other have pointed out this is not the first time but we predicted it this time. What happens is people who are in the same location in space will have their instance merge randomly with another... this could be with players in PG or in OPEN, due to the high load this occurs multiple times ever hour, meaning a player like me sitting at the beacon is getting merged with players in Private Group(Fleetcomm here I come!) and then attack them, they will not even be able to see me in some cases, just as some people can see me but I cannot see them

Imagine if you will.... One mode... But 3 flags.. Each player picks a flag and can only see the same flags, or no flags, or all flags...

Now imagine in that same scenario... the view flags code was having a senile moment and when I should seeing no flags I can see all flags etc etc.

That's how it happens.. Well, my analysis of what actually happens.
