Class 3 rail gun

Can anyone give me a reason not to have this? I would really love to use a class 3 rail gun on my corvette. Aside from my personal interests, I think the meta would be shaken up, maybe the Fer-De-Lance (without a class 3 hard point) would see slightly less use in every fight.

I think reason that the FdL is considered the meta isn't just down to damage output, but a combination of that with how manouverable it is, especially considering the vert/lat thrusters, the strength of it's boost and shield strength. Basically it's very good at not being hit and taking damage when it is hit as well.

As for a class 3 rail, I think the reason we don't have this is because it would be quite overpowered. I would be putting them straight on a Krait mk2 and that probably would end up being silly, especially if you could configure them to work with the short range blaster mod (the 7A distro probably allow you to do that too). We probably have enough tools to stick in hardpoint slots for straight up bullying NPCs right now.

Thing is, if it's PvE, the real meta is a gimballed Chieftain. With PvP, discussions I've seen seem to suggest that there's a very high skill level needed to use rails effectively, so I'm not sure many would switch, especially to a ship which may end up being easier to hit and stay out of the line of fire of.

I appreciate your thoughts but I think weapon and damage balancing was thrown out after engineering so any concerns about something being OP isn't really a good reason not to have it. It won't be completely game breaking so the slight imbalance won't hurt anything. You're saying you would put them straight on a krait - thats my point because you wouldn't be using the FDL. The FDL is meta because the reasons you mentioned and the fact it's weapon all converge making its medium hard points viable. Other ships are plenty good at avoiding damage and/or taking damage. I think ships with large hard points would be used more if large rail guns were a thing.

Thing is though, when I think about it I don't think I'd swap out the Pacifiers I currently use for this. Actually, scrap my overpowered weapon argument, we already have that.

I would 100% swap my large multicannon on the corvette for a large rail gun, then swap the current small rail guns I use to something else.

I love rail guns.....I don't think it would be OP because 1 shot would damn near blow your power plant in terms of heat.....pretty balanced...and since all rail guns are fixed (afaik) - requires skill....

Buuut..I'm sure there's a reason they don't exist....albeit engineered Rail guns are OP or the "Imperial Hammer" I think its called.

There's potential for its creation - but it may get relegated to be a "meh" weapon in the end when balancing is done.....if they even do that.

But I'd love me a large rail gun regardless - cause RAIL GUNs are cool.

Thats pretty much where I'm at. As long as it's an upgrade from using two small rail guns on the front of my corvette, then I'd use it. I don't think FD would implement it in a way that would make it a god weapon, blowing ships up in one shot....even though that can already happen with several different weapons (obviously not against engineered ship). That is my main reason as to 'why not'

I guess the amount of power required and heat it would generate per shot would be almost prohibitive to have more than one class 3 installed... but hey, why not...

That's why its only "large" slots or "huge" slots - if that....but that is a given.

And sadly FD has bigger issues to worry about these days.
