Classic Engineering Material gathering in 2022

Hey all,

Well, it's finally come to this, it was inevitable though I've not been looking forward to it. I need to grind some classic (space ship) Engineering materials.

I gather all I can during my regular gameplay activities, so Manufactured from ship destruction, data from ship scans. I top up on what I can, then do a little material trading (the wrong way, low-tier traded in for higher-tier stuff) but there are still things I've become rather short of, namely Raw Materials such as Selenium and the like. My regular activities don't include anything that grant me Raw Materials as I've not mined in a while now, and am not particularly keen to go back to it at this time.

Over the years, I've bookmarked numerous sites that were good for getting the various Raw Materials and had visited them a number of times, prior to Odyssey. Now I play exclusively in Odyssey - I've had weird goings on when I switched between the two - and was wondering if there are any good guides out there. I have of course attempted to search for guides on Material Gathering in Odyssey, but they've focused on the materials needed for on-foot things, like suits and weapons - something I have no interest in.

The issue is, from what I can see, is that locations that were good in Horizons for gathering a certain Raw Materials, don't work / have changed in Odyssey, one assumes due to the new planetary terrain generation. I did try to do some Raw material gathering last year in Odyssey, but there were numerous issues and bugs (scanner not working) making it a more frustrating experience than ever.

If anyone can share any tips, locations or guides on good places to gather the key high-tier Raw Materials, I'd be most grateful. I have tried going to the locations I used to, but had more luck picking a random nearby planet with the relevant Materials listed over going to the prior "best" locations. I'd be open to doing missions too, if any give Raw materials as a reward.

I admit, I've likely forgotten stuff regarding material gathering in general, my brain tends to blank out semi-traumatic grind experiences lol. I've also just come back to the game after a long break, so feeling a bit rusty in general.

Cheers.

I did this not so long ago in Odyssey

Then just trade up and down at a mat trader. If memory serves correct one of the shard farms In c1a did not have polonium but all the other areas in c1a did.

Remember : Jamesons crash site for data and Davs Hope for manufactured mats.

Edit: Should reference downtoearthasteonomy for this.

Thanks @He$$eeTant, I will check those out.

Are these regular surface POI's? I assume I have to approach the planet and send probes as usual? I really haven't done this for a while and, as I mentioned, stuff was broken when I did initially try this is Odyssey.

Yes pretty sure I sent probes and they all just appeared, as I say one POI did not have what was advertised but all the others did. As a side note I did not relog, I flew from one site to another and one planet to the next until I had filled my quota on the available mats.

I feel your pain and I may also be joining you shortly.

In horizons I'd go to geological sites on planets that contained the right raw mats...I'm intrigued to find out how it now works in Odyssey.

You fill up on high end “G5” mats. Then go to a material trader and swap your high end mats for whatever you need. That said mat traders where added in Feb 2017 so not really an odyssey thing.

I still farm RAW mats in HOR.

In HOR after you DSS the planet you'll see Biological Sites. These are the Crystal Forests. They are dense and you can fill up an entire G5 stack in just one or two bio sites.

In ODY, you check the heat map and try to land in a dense area. The bios are spread out and require a lot more driving and use of the wave scanner. With skill and some good RNG the collection rate is almost as good and HOR, but it does take a lot more effort.

In addition to the sites listed at the top, here are the remaining RAW sites (with known good/flat bio sites listed):

SYSTEM | BODY | MAT | SITE
HIP 36601
| C1A | Polonium | Biological 1, 5
HIP 36601 | C1D | Ruthenium | Biological 5, 3
HIP 36601 | C3B | Tellurium | Biological 4, 5
HIP 36601 | C5A | Technetium | Biological 2, 4
OUTOTZ LS-K D8-3 | B5C | Antimony | Biological 1, 3
OUTOTZ LS-K D8-3 | B5A | Yttrium | Biological 1, 19

I recently found a planet with vulcanism and Braintree sites that overlapped, and was finding lots of selenium. Every 3 or 4 Braintrees had selenium (polyporous growth) and the needle crystals had a mix of polonium and selenium. I'd say I picked up 80 or so selenium in 30 minutes of throughly enjoyable srv prospecting on a stunningly beautiful planet. Happy to look up the location if you'd like.

Yes, please share the location if it's not too much trouble to look it up.

D2EA did a EDO video version for the same thing. its Harder to find them but as it was video'ed it will show planet way points still for the location he did..

Note he had to report that correct release on material in EDO was picky over which fire type would release materials in Jan 2022
Going to shards for a single item is not recommended, going there for multi materials is....

You're still going to have to jump >3000Ly round trip back to bubble...
So if only after a single material, SRV ground collection in bubble is quicker for that single items...
Multi items then go to shard....

Due to the items being very small and low on the stalks low gravity carpet bombing and collection via limpets will not work to avoid SRV use...

I checked out the D2E video, most useful, thank you. Just wish I could set the carrier to multi-jump while I'm offline...maybe one day!

Btw: do people think it's worth it to take a carrier out there, or do people generally just take a ship with a decent jump range such as the DBX? I'm inclined to take the carrier, just so I've got the option to return for repairs, replacement SRV's etc. if things go wrong.

Btw 2: If my carrier were in-system and my ship or SRV got destroyed, would I respawn back at my Carrier? I mean, is the Carrier classed as the "Last Dock" like Space Stations are when things go wrong? I rarely die as I'm super cautious, which is role play choice mostly.

No worries, it's Synuefe CL-N C23-10 body 12 D A. Bring a surface scanner so you can hone in on the Braintree sites. Some areas seemed to be richer in Selenium than others, so try a few locations if you go there.

It's only 450 ly or so from the bubble so I just go out there with a ship. Also I don't own a carrier so I guess there's that...

Funny enough, I just went through the work to get my Type-10 Flechette farmer out to the forests last night and can confirm the limpet return rate is indeed very low (not zero though). Instead I'm going to move a pair of Flechettes over to the DBX and see if I carpet-bomb a site before landing and if all crystalline fragments will have already been knocked down for scooping.

I love D2EA but if you want more information on how the heat map works in ODY this is the best video I've seen for it @Scoob :

Elite Dangerous Odyssey - How to find Geological and Biological features

Thanks for all the replies guys. Didn't get chance to play today, but will hopefully have some time later this week or over the weekend. Will take full stock of what I do have first, and trade anything I have a decent amount of - if any - but I know I'm definitely low on Selenium and at least a couple of others.
