Claustrophobic Hangar

Hi all o7

I've been playing for about 300 hours now and I think I've just about left the "newb" stage. One gripe that I've had since the first time I booted up the game is how clumsy and awkward it is to actually see where things are on your ship in outfitting.

If I'm applying a decal, installing a hardpoint, or or trying to get a good view of a paint job, the camera is so damn close to the ship that you can see the dead microbes killed by the vacuum of space.

I have no perspective of where a hardpoint is located, I have no hope of getting a decent impression of what a decal looks like when applied, and I can only preview the front end of any liveries.

The only way I can see any of these things properly is to apply them, come out of outfitting, and go into screenshot mode. If I don't like them I have to go back into outfitting, make tweaks, come out, and check again. It feels very convoluted, and I'd love to have something that eases the process.

Opinions? Agree? Disagree?

It would be nice to be able to freely move the camera around while in outfitting. Even just being able to zoom in/out and orbit the camera around the ship on a fixed path would make a big difference.

Believe it or not, it was even worse before

edit: now at least if I apply a spoiler the camera actually moves to the rear of the ship, 5-6 months ago we had to apply cosmetics in blind mode, get out of the hangar, waiting for the platform to move, go into the old clunky camera mode, slowly pan because there was a single speed available and repeat the process if we didn't like the result.

not only that but sometimes you're in a station that doesnt even have the hangar lights on so you have to return the ship to the surface to get a good look at the paintjobs and body kits

Another point I forgot to mention is that if you're previewing things you are considering purchasing, you're stuffed. The compact in-your-face view as all you get, since you can't leave outfitting with said item applied.

I also completely agree with this, especially in reference to larger ships.

I agree completely with you.
This is something FDev needs to revisit eventually.

Currently they show us our own ship in outfitting as it sits in the hangar.
They should forget about that. It doesn't work. There simply is not enough room to display large ships in such a way that we can clearly see where everything is located.
If I am in an Anaconda for example they could simply display a standard anaconda hull in a more schematic way that allows us to see clearly where all hard points and modules etc. are located.

Or just showing us a plan view of the ship.

Agree! Freely moving camera would be best. Perhaps this will be considered a worthy QoL upgrade for Beyond series.

I'd like this schematic-style build method for the functional ship components, and a freecam arrangement for external cosmetic work.
