Clean or Dirty? Cobra MKIII

Have a couple of hours to indulge in Elite this morning. Called one of my MKIII smugglers to Deciat for some drive tuning.

Am leaning towards clean, this ship is just for a little low pay Han Solo fun, a bit of dodgy cargo and a few passengers wanting to stay off the radar. - Current build below..

No shields
2X Heat sinks
3A Power plant
4A Thrusters - 304 M/S Cruise - 435 Boost
3A Dist
3A Sensors
36T Cargo
6 Capacity Business class Cabin.

Been smuggling in heavy freighters since early beta/gamma.. Speed is not essential for my smuggling style.

A quick forum search and it's 9 out 10 suggesting dirty.. My logic is the Cobra is damn fast already, Clean will give it a little extra punch whilst maintaining up to 40% better heat efficiency.

So, what are all you small ship smugglers running?

Cheers

Clean drives only make it easier to scoop fuel at stars...

I did a test in my Corvette. I got a lvl5 over the top roll on clean drives for heat efficiency and my heat while boosting goes up to 51%. You know how high it goes on lvl5 dirty drives? 50%! LOL That is because clean drives consume more power thus generate more passive heat.

Same goes for low emission power plants... Totally useless...

Dirty all the way.

The Cobra's fun, but I really like the iCourier with Enhanced Drives modded to G5 DD.

Full throttle around 400 and boosts to 550M/S

Still scoops just fine.

There's really no downside to "more speed."

In addition, the Couier has incredible shields. Testing now in beta with Prismatic shield and 4 E boosters - one each Resistance, Thermal, Explosive, and Kinetic Augmented. Haven't dropped below one ring in a Haz Res yet after 2 hours.

With SRV and 3A Fuels Scoop it can still haul 8T of cargo for mission running.

I'm doing a similar setup on my Orca for passenger missions. Ideal for hauling illegal passengers.

OP - your build looks better suited for Clean assuming you want to keep a low heat signature and be stealthy.

I've found that you can avoid getting scanned by just coming in at around 200M/S aligned on the center of the toaster from about 5km out. No real need to go dark.

Thanks guys, so here's an example - The ship is currently running at 21% heat with everything running except the cargo scoop & power dist. Are you saying the clean drive won't reduce the ships heat output percentage?

I guess the only way is to test this myself.

Looking at the Inara Blueprints, it does show that although the thermal load of the drive goes down, the power draw on the power plant goes up. That would explain how you might not see an overall thermal improvement using Clean drives.

Pretty easy to test in the beta.

My Cobra will only see dirty. A true scoundrel would shiver at the idea of something "clean" on his ship.

But jokes aside, I'm never going to do any serious combat in it, I don't see why I would need to mind my heat. Smuggling is different, it involves only small amounts of time when you need to be cold. And with my choice of weapons, I never need lots of power and can go for a heat efficient power plant. PvP is probably going to resume to me trying to get away from a fleet of FdLs, so the extra speed will help.

EDIT: now with added gif for maximum smugglerness:

Man I wished the engineers would be about crew members aboard our ships tinkering at them, not this farm rep and rares bull.....

Depends on what ye building. Some want D drives only, I use D drives on 1 ship, the other 2 have clean drives. I build each ship as I see fit. I listen to others then make my ships mine.

Long time no see :)

Yeah I am using dirties all the way on my Cobra. Give is an efficient power plant and strip the weapons, get efficient landing shields. That will get you as cool as you need to be. Maybe a heat sink or two just for fun.

Cobra has no heat issues, so it's "Dirty all the way" :)

(the heat efficiency difference really is completely miniscule when applied to this Ship - if you had asked about a Type-7 or Beluga... that's a different Story)

I'm a big fan of the Clean drive / Low emission PP combo.

I have it on my utility/smugler/explorer Asp in the live game and I built a test DBS in the Beta: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ood-addition?p=4898575&viewfull=1#post4898575

Can more people confirm this? I have g5 clean drives on my Vette cos of the heat but if it's not that bad I'd rather switch to dirty.
