Newcomer / Intro Clean Slate?

So I got the game yesterday, and I believe I have kind of messed up... I started trying to do some trading, but found that on 4 cargo space and 1000cr, there isn't much progress to be made as a noobie. Traded some high supply tech to agri systems, but going back and forth, I made a net 1132cr, trowing 60-80% of my cr in the cargo hold, so probably not the best of ideas. So I took up a "3 pirates bounty" mission from the board for 18,574cr. Warped to the system and after hitting all kinds of stuff like funeral ships and wedding barges along with a lot of nothing as well (ships speeding away) I managed to find 2 of the "pirates" in over 60 minutes. They told me they weren't pirates and offered to kill 3 federal inspectors instead paying me 12,000cr instead. Figured that was probably a bad idea and attacked them. The first one was wanted, but the second one was not (in that system I guess). I also scooped up 3 units of Leather from the first fight (it was a class 6 trading vessel) and man, was that NOT worth it... It was a wanted pirate, but the cargo was still flagged as stolen it turned out. The second guy I got fined for attacking and killing too. So after another 30 minutes in the system not finding the right Unid Signal Source, and getting pulled over a couple of times, I decided to just give up and try and pay off my bounty. So I headed back to another system with a base, but upon being scanned I got a wanted status there too for having stolen cargo. Signed off, and found that today I had failed the quest and was not getting that 18.5K cr either. So I'm down over 20K in fines with two factions, I have worthless stolen cargo that I ended up jettisoning to avoid further fines and my net worth is minus 24000 cr... Can I start over? The game is a bit clunky and awkward on the menu's IMO... Galaxy navigating is alright, but no hud target indicator arrows, no contract tracking, very manual trading interface... Tried to redeem my losses by mining a bit today, but have sadly only found ores worth under the 2k cr each... If there is a chance to start over I guess I better stick to bullitin board free bounty hunting I guess.

Yes, you can start over. All you need to do is to use a "Clear save" option. It will reset all your progress.

As for the "kill pirates" contracts, first of all I check that the targets are in the controlled space (non-Anarchy) and the easiest way to look for them is at the nav beacon, wanted NPCs are generated there from time to time.

Do not get scanned while carrying stolen goods.

No shame in a few resets till you get to know the Galactic Law (and how to avoid it). Much better now than when you have got yourself a ship worth keeping and a healthy bankroll.

I got all the way to a lakon 9 space cow so about 100,000,000 CR and wiped

started again and played a much better game - gettingthe biggest ship isnt the best way to play elite, Getting the BADDEST ship you can is

A well armed well protected cobra is better than an Asp any day of the week

The 'Clear save' option is your friend. It's worth spending a few trial runs just trying things out, making a mess of things and then, well, I found that google was pretty handy for working out exactly what had gone wrong as Elite games always had a steep learning curve.
Also don't expect to progress through the game too quickly. A starting pilot with a sidewinder and 1000Cr won't be a millionaire overnight, in this game it takes time and knowledge. To help boost your starting cash though can I advise learning how the exploration works? Scanning some unknown contacts while you're flying about trading etc can make a surprising amount of cash to get you started off.

Oh, and Stolen cargo can be sold anywhere with a Black Market listed under services, and no police hang around near outposts to scan you, only at stations ;)

I see, so I guess the advice to "start bulletin questing" as a new player wasn't the greatest... Mining from my 2 hour experience with it doesn't seem a solid option either, really depends on where you end up and if there are actually any worthwhile metals around. Trading with just 1000cr and a hold for 4 tonnes is also a lousy option... Will it actually eventually become easier to do these "find X at U Signal S"? They seem like an immense chore to me. (haha, you just found a funeral, you can now warp way at 1/18 of normal charging speed) I'll try to be even more careful next time. == Something unrelated; why does this forum mess up my paragraphs so badly?!

If you fly further away from the heavier ships, their mass won't affect your FSD, usual rule of thumb is boost - charge - boost - let heat bleed off - jump to SC

Edit: Also, bulletin board quests can be a great way to start off, but until you get some experience under your belt you probably want to try the ones that pay a bit less as the pay is usually proportional to the risk or effort involved.

I have been playing about a week....grinded through the trading routine enough to upgrade my ship a little. If I had to go back to the Sidewinder I would get a few upgrades and go to the NAV beacon into normal space. Just hang around scanning ships until you find a wanted. If its a small ship harmless you can attack it. If you are over matched wait it out and let the feds start the fight and get the shields down then jump in. Kind of like a Hyena lets the lion make the kill and then goes in to eat it :)

Nothing wrong with that advise if you ask me. Good way to see some of the local area, and you can scan, trade, smuggle etc while you are doing it.

Correct. Never tried it myself, but I doubt the starting LHS system has much of value

They can be better when you have a slightly better ship. Doing it in a Cobra allows you to fight the pirates and collect all the other illegal items that are not part of the mission for a handy blackmarket profit (or to complete other missions IMMEDIATLY without having to go look for them).

I've been playing about a week. I'd read the Mostly Harmless guide in this forum, it's very useful.

For starting out, the bulletin board is fine, but you should probably just go for Courier missions, or the ones where they ask you to transport X goods to station Y. These can pay really well. If you sell the Basic Scanner and buy an extra 2 of cargo space you'll be able to take the missions which need you to transport 5 or 6 of an item. In about 30 mins you should probably have enough CR to upgrade your Sidey to a better fighter (if you want to bounty hunt) or get more cargo space (if you want to trade). The Sidey isn't really good to trade commodities though. You can't transport too much so profit margins are quite low.

As others said, you need to have scanned a ship and see that it's wanted before you can kill it.

If you have illegal goods you can still transport it into a station. You just need to line up with the letter box about 7 km out (remember to request docking), then speed through. If you go through at high speed the patrolling ships don't have enough time to scan you, and if you hit thrusters up or down after getting in you'll break line of sight. Just remember to hit the breaks once you're in. I used to like boosting through, which was fine in my Sidey and Adder, but after I got a Cobra I couldn't slow down in time and got smeared all over the Orbital's back wall :D. You can also trade illegal stuff with the stations that have outside docking. They never scan you. This is good info to know, as sometimes you get missions asking for slaves. If you can find an Anarchy system nearby which exports slaves, you can make a lot of CR (between 40-50k) smuggling them. The slave trade was how I upgraded from the Sidey to the Adder, and it also contributed a lot to my Cobra.

Yes, starting out is rough. But my fav for starting out is to pick up the kill pirates missions. Then go to the system the mission describes (usually the system your in or the system next door etc.) and when you are in the correct system, go to the Nav Point location - Its right next to the star you warp in at - Now, not all systems have Nav Point beacons, but most do. Once there, just sit around and keep scanning till you see wanted. Let the feds help you out by damaging them and then help out when he gets low. Odds are, many of these guys are pirates so you get the bounties and the mission completion.

The best places to guarenteed find pirates is the resource extraction sites. Unlike the nav points where you find smugglers, wanted bounty hunters etc, a resource extraction site will have mostly pirates.

My general rule of thumb is, unless its like palladium or slaves or something worth over 5k/ton I wont pick it up if they drop it, especially in the sidewinder. You can worry about that kind of stuff later on.

Oh and to clear your save do it from the options menu that you see just after you click start in the launcher - open the game, but dont actually go IN game if you get what i mean
