Clean up Odyssey engineer items!

So Horizons engineering is one thing. Items are clearly marked, there's too many many of them as well, and while some are harder to get than others, it's possible to keep an adequate amount of needed items. Okay. CIF might be hard to get, but it's POSSIBLE.

Odyssey though, is different. In a bad way.
  • Assets aren't TOO bad, there's a bunch, but they're also clearly useful, and you can trade between them. I wish it was 100 of each like Horizons items, but... whatever.
  • Goods are bad. Is it a junk item? Is it required for upgrades? Is it required to give to an engineer for a reference? Have fun guessing, and referencing a list on a website!
  • Data is terrible. A massive list of random items, acquired via RNG from ONLY powered-on settlements. Getting them is boring, since you just STAND there waiting. And you need a LOT of these rare items for any upgrade! Is it a critical item? Again- you're sorting through Inara lists, HOPING that the cat pictures you just sold aren't important. Because you need QUANTITIES of some of these for upgrades, and they are not marked differently than trash items. And there seems to be a LOT of trash items.
FDev, this is horrible. It's bad enough for me, sorting through lists, but you are COMPLETELY screwing consoles or people who won't/can't sort through THIRD PARTY LISTS.

And there's too many data items. Inara lists ONE HINDRED AND FIFTEEN different data items, and SEVENTY-TWO of them have no known use yet?!?! Except for the ones that do have a use. And of course, it's impossible to tell.

Goods? THIRTY-FIVE of the FOURTY-THREE items have no use. Except for the ones that do, and when you DO need them, well, hope you didn't sell that Push, because Domino wants it. And Hope you checked the third-party website to see what you do need! And oh, those rare Genetic Repair Meds that you sold, another engineer wants 5.

PLEASE reduce the lists of these items, and clearly mark trash, and put a "sell trash" button. And a "sell ALL trash" button. And once Domino has her 5 Push, for instance, sell ALL trash dumps that, but "sell trash" would let you keep a few Push for new players.

The AMOUNT of data is ridiculous as well. I can deal with 10 metal coils for magazine size, for instance, but 10 "weapon test data" when you get ONE of them ONCE in a while? That's just absurd. I've done a LOT of stuff, I've SOLD metal coils, and I still have 41, that's fine. I have gotten, in the same amount of time, 2 weapon test data (of 10 needed) and 0 "security expenses" of the 5 needed.

That's dumb.

Yeah - finding the data once can be a fun puzzle - finding it another 10 (or 40 for Opinion Polls) is a chore. No wonder people relog. Some is available as mission rewards which is ok, the rest ... too RNG.

(Three main sources are salvage missions which have data points, mission rewards, and settlements. Don't forget you can scan data points in accessible buildings when doing delivery missions...)

Agreed with everything except where you said there aren't too many in horizons... Go look at the full coma-inducing, absurd and confusingly named list we've been sifting through for years. It just got easier over time to know what to ignore and when they changed it to cap per material it became less onerous.

I think someone at frontier really believes it's immersive to have a bajillion different flavours of unicorn droppings randomly stuffed into identical cupboards. I have to say I'd prefer a few more unique looking cupboards and a few fewer bits of random tat that you can't even trade for less-useless tat.

And they also made the same mistake in going back to a global mat store. When you have individual mat limits then is doesn't matter as much if some is junk - you collect it - it stays full, you ignore it. With a a shared limit you're back to trying to work out what to keep and what to sell ... with nearly 200 things to keep track of. It's not like we haven't done this before ....

....Yeah, you're right. Massive amounts of junk.

Horizons materials could use a huge reduction, especially now with all the Odyssey junk thrown in. You have... 120 or so materials in Horizons? You could have the exact same system with around 20 and nobody would lose out. Get rid of a load of them, redistribute the remaining materials across the blueprints and synth recipes.

I haven't done a count of Odyssey materials but it must be around 100 from a quick look at inara? Not even free to play mobile games have this many currencies in them.

The problem is materials, data, and other things do not come organically. I am not very well versed in Engineering. I have been playing since 2015-ish so it's not like I am new. I just don't like the grind. Anyways.., I just think there should be a better flow.

Grade and Categorize the Mats and Data. Then instead of forcing a specific named item needed the player just needs any from a category with in a grade.
Grade 1 - 5
Category : Tech, Data, Mineral

So I need a Grade 1 upgrade. It requires "X" Tech Grade 1, "X" Data Grade 1, "X" Mineral Grade 1. X = Number needed.

Then regardless of how a player plays the game they will generally be finding what they need. Either in space or planet side, on foot or srv, the player can collect what they need simply by doing whatever. I would even add this scheme to the mission rewards and grades would follow this based on difficulty of the mission or simply the reputation the player has built up with the factions they are working for.

It needs work.
