Clicking to play in Open Play but then am put in Solo Play

I just got the game today, and I REALLY want to play with my friends, but CANNOT figure out how to get onto the multiplayer server even though it seems it should just be so simple by hitting the Open Play option? I asked if I needed to complete the tutorial or something in order to play online - I figured that would make sense - but my friends said they never did it and I really don't want to myself.
Help?

It should be that simple. What happens when you click on "open"?

Are you sure you are not in open, just in an instance/island all on your own?

This happens to me a lot, my poor internet connection would lag everyone else to pieces so I a am in a little universe alone most of the time.

When I hit escape, and I go to the menu essentially, it clearly says I am in SOLO mode at the bottom center.

I'm having a similar issue. When I enter OPEN PLAY, it then says that I'm playing in open, but there are no players anywhere and the bandwidth is only under 100 B/s, just like in solo. I tried jumping around Aulin, I Bootis, Eranin, Super-Cruising, entering stations, nav beacons, and still no human players. I have a stable 100 Mbps connection and I'm really sad about this.

Edit: Reinstalling the game fixed this, woo!

A suggestion for people who are trying to play online and it's putting you in solo - make sure you have firewall settings that allow the game to go out. You may be blocking the ports needed for open play and that's causing the game to switch to solo.

Same Issue here.

I click on "open play". After station is loaded i press "ESC" and it says "Current mode: Solo"

- My FW is set and Router is set UPnP allowed.
- Reinstalled game twice, not working

Do I have to do tutorials, leave the initial System i be put into or something else?

Same here. It distinctly says "SOLO" on screen when I hit ESC. Yesterday I encountered another commander whilst playing, but couldn't tell if it were a player or NPC

Edit: 18.12.2014: Says "Open play" now. Apparently, you have to make the first jump to exit Solo play.

You have to fly to another solar system first then it will change. Its to stop newbies getting hassle till they are ready.

So, to be sure. When you click on open, wait until you are ingame, jump out into Supercruise and hit the ESC-button. At the bottom is your current mode displayed.
If this doesn't work:
Tell your friends to do the same.
If this still doesn't work:
Add eachother to your friendlist if you haven't already done that and wing up. Jump into another system and meet at a specific area (starport, RES, etc.).
And the last chance: Try out group mode to make a test.

Otherwise: write a support ticket.
