Client taking over by other player in the game - possible?

In Eravate we had an interesting situation yesterday evening around 9pm GMT.
Many commanders received the error message:
Your game is likely to crash because another player is connected to the same server but using an incompatible version of the game.
This shouldn't happen under normal circumstances and we are working on preventing players from doing this in future releases of the game.

The results that the game crashed and the instance was afterwards totally empty for around 1 hour.
The error message implies that another client took over the system or at least had some customization in his client profile.
Does anybody has similiar experience this this?

Here is a video also associated with this error message. While other commanders received the message the following happened.
After docking and repair you can see that my heat sinks are malfunctioning.
At 2:13 you can see the modules health decreasing.
Have a look by yourself

That looks suspiciously like someone using a hacked game client. I'd report it so the support team can take a look.

you should have put some X-files tune with the vid... seriously dont understand whats going on with your modules.

Yeah, looks like someone was hacking. tbh the security is pretty low, one of the many problems of p2p based games.

With my highly advanced instinct of sniffing for the source I come to just one single conclusion.
It's Thargoids.

In all seriousness though: This should be a reason to finally inbest in a proper server, even if that means FD would have to build a whole new structe ane I know Sandy just told the community that drastic changes are discouraged in game developement but using a P2P architecture is in my opinion the wrong way from the beginning. Other games can work with thousands of players as well so why not Elite? It is possible and IMO even neccessary.

That video looked like someone was carrying a UA.

As for that error message, that's not something I'm thinking came from the game...definitely need to report that to support asap.

This was reported and ensured that QA-team will look into this. Interesting would be if this is a one time situation, or if somebody had already a similar experience with this in the past. As this happened in Eravate is understandable as they are currently really a lot of different clans flying around for PvP action. Probably it has to do with different ED versions like Elite Dangerous and Horizons or even the 64bit version. Anybody has an opinion on this?

Yes it is possible. Host a central server in the UK and those of us on the other side of the world then suffer latency issues that effectively result in us not having any sort of fighting chance in PvP. It's never fun having to be on the wrong end of 250-300 ms (and more) difference, and in PvP it can be a deathnell to even bothering, at least in my experience (across a number of online games, both PvE and PvP). And while that latency might not sound like much, and remains somewhat playable, it's an added disadvantage I do not want if I can avoid it. At least with P2P, for all its faults, we know when we're instanced with someone we're at least somewhat parable in terms of connection (or should be if the matchmaking works as intended) and if combat results, our fate is determined more by our loadout and skill than the vagaries of latency disparity. The alternative is Frontier hosts multiple server locations - never mind the unnecessary expense for a company like Frontier, but what impact might that have on the single shared BGS, across platforms to boot? Multiple versions of the BGS that would rapidly differ from one another and be an additional management burden for Frontier? P2P might not be perfect, but for many of us it's a better option (if working correctly). And for Frontier too I'd wager. That said, if Frontier decided to switch to a central server, I wouldn't be too concerned.....but would never log into open again, except maybe when on deep space exploration trips (being bounced by jerks is one thing, being bounced and destroyed before my connection even caught up? No thanks.)

I've had several of these crashes.
Oddly enough, even in solo lol

And even more oddly, the game doesn't crash, it keeps going for awhile before things start getting weird.

I have launched and died in a space station with heat going up to 160% before I even got out of the station. No devices activated. And in solo. There does seem to be occasional glitches. The client message may also be red herring too.

The real question is: why proper clients crash instead of the 'incompatible' client being kicked off from the server, since it was obviously recognized?

this happened to me and a friend using the same router connection while he was using the MAC version and I was using the regular PC version.

:D Wierd things were still going on in Eravate around 1am. I was interdicted and after an unusually long wait to emerge from supercruise my fighter rather unsportingly powered down everything. The interdictors found a small fighter turning off it's shields and trundling to a stop instead of the expected dog raring for a fight- sorry, chaps- while I got a swift kick back to the rebuy screen.

Now it could have been a hack; it could have been Thargoids! [alien] But it's much more likely to be what Josiah described- a weird by product of dissimilar computers, latency, geographically remote servers and (possibly) the on watch techie being on a tea break.

I'm not sure REAGE!!! at FDs peer to peer architecture is helpful- they're unlikely to change it any time soon. Better to bless whichever genius in the development team came up with the insurance rebuy- it really takes the sting out of bugs and glitches.

I sent them a bug report- maybe they can figure out what happened and prevent it happening again. But after that? Well, as the King once said:

I've seen hackers flying in Eravate before, it's very possible they were using some sort of hack to try to cause damage to players and they inadvertently ended up screwing up the synchronization, causing clients to be kicked off.

We never exactly will find out, but if this is like you describe - this means that Frontier somehow is able to detect these stuff and does react in the game. In consequence if it is detectable, it’s only a matter of time when these accounts will be frozen - which would be actually just great!
