Clipper Loadout

Just got myself a shiny new clipper. Of course I'm now bankrupt and need to make some money to buy decent guns - which leads me to my question:

What are peoples' thoughts on weaponry? I intend to use the ship in an all round role. Quite a lot of trading, but combat ready to take on interdictions and also fly in wings with friends in 1.2.

My initial instinct is to go with lasers on the large hardpoints and cannons of some kind on the mediums, much as I had my Asp set up. And they will want to be gimballed.

But before I go with this tried and tested format, I wonder if anyone has ideas on something more exotic, railguns or plasma weapons - something like that.
 
Personally, I'm a fan of beam and burst lasers on the smaller hardpoints. Shields don't suffer the penalty to damage like trying to rip apart a hull does, so I'd recommend sticking your kinetic weapons in the large hardpoint slots (not to mention they won't drain as much power).

I... I don't know how to feel about railguns. I ran with them for a while, and they can be great fun, but you better hit with them or else you've just wasted your ammo, and they don't have much to speak of. Still, very good for taking out modules. Multicannons have always been my favorite kinetic weapon: tons of ammo, very power efficient, and great for chewing up drives. I haven't played with cannons, though.
