I am fairly green at PvP, and would like some input on a recent experience, particularly as it relates to the limitations of various builds, if that is not too much to ask. I jumped into a Crime Sweep and ran into a 2 man wing with Clipper and Conda. The Clipper was spamming pack-hound shots, which it seem to have been stacked full with. I hadn't actually engaged any of the bigger ships PvP since switching my DBS to 4 rails (all penetrator), and then engineering the hell out of it. https://eddp.co/u/sT5aYhL2

I knew I was punching way out of my weight class, but I just wanted to see how much damaged I could do. Much to my disappointment, that was none. I took two or three runs at the Clipper, and I couldn't even scratch the shields. Literally I would pump three sets of 4 rails effectively back to back, and the outer ring of the shields didn't even dim. As one might expect, once I ran out of heat sinks, he locked me with his pack hounds and took me out.

Now I know this was never a winning fight, especially without backup but the scale of the defeat has left me with two questions:
1. What is, roughly, the limit on a DBS like this punching above its weight in PvP; just in terms of ability to effectively deal damage to a target -- where's the line where it's not even worth shooting back like this?
2. What would it actually take to take on something like this Clipper? I have been playing around with shipbuilders, and I'm having a hard time coming up with a good setup even for a larger ship. I mean if I'm reading this stuff right, even a huge PA doesn't do THAT more to shields then a medium rail. Not enough to overcome 3 bursts of 4 rails. So what would it take, if that didn't even scratch it?

No expert at PVP either but you're going to need BIGGER guns! ;), seriously though the DBS doesn't have a PD capable of sustained railgun fire (never mind the heat issues) and the potential shielding on a PVP clipper can be substantial, have a look at the rough build I've put together.

If you add your DBS as an opposing ship the clippers shields (without SCB's) will hold for 35 seconds so a 5 - 8 second railgun attack isn't going to do that much shield damage I'm afraid, I reckon you'd need high sustained shield damage weapons like beams/burst/pulse/PAs and for that you'd need a serious PD, power plant and solid shields, sounds like a Python to me!

For high MJ shields it's going to take sustained fire from energy weapons to take them down and though rails are effective the rate of fire and cooldowns will reduce the sustained DPS significantly, a ship with a large engineered PD can lay down sustained with minimal heat issues and have capable shields as well (a Python with the same shields and boosters will have over 30% more shields)
