I am fairly green at PvP, and would like some input on a recent experience, particularly as it relates to the limitations of various builds, if that is not too much to ask. I jumped into a Crime Sweep and ran into a 2 man wing with Clipper and Conda. The Clipper was spamming pack-hound shots, which it seem to have been stacked full with. I hadn't actually engaged any of the bigger ships PvP since switching my DBS to 4 rails (all penetrator), and then engineering the hell out of it. https://eddp.co/u/sT5aYhL2
I knew I was punching way out of my weight class, but I just wanted to see how much damaged I could do. Much to my disappointment, that was none. I took two or three runs at the Clipper, and I couldn't even scratch the shields. Literally I would pump three sets of 4 rails effectively back to back, and the outer ring of the shields didn't even dim. As one might expect, once I ran out of heat sinks, he locked me with his pack hounds and took me out.
Now I know this was never a winning fight, especially without backup but the scale of the defeat has left me with two questions:
1. What is, roughly, the limit on a DBS like this punching above its weight in PvP; just in terms of ability to effectively deal damage to a target -- where's the line where it's not even worth shooting back like this?
2. What would it actually take to take on something like this Clipper? I have been playing around with shipbuilders, and I'm having a hard time coming up with a good setup even for a larger ship. I mean if I'm reading this stuff right, even a huge PA doesn't do THAT more to shields then a medium rail. Not enough to overcome 3 bursts of 4 rails. So what would it take, if that didn't even scratch it?
