Ships Clipper vs Courier (Exploration)

I'd like to know which one makes the best explorer ship.

Factoring jump range, and how often and fast they scoop.

That's easy, courier by a country mile:

1D can still boost in a courier, right? May be able to drop shield then.

How far does the 8T fuel tank takes you without refueling? In the Clipper the 16T one, is only somewhere between 70 and 80 LY (But it can scoop with a glorious A7 Scoop which is makes it 4.5x quicker to fill the tank, probably more because of the Courier's heat problems when scooping)

The courier has a class 3 FSD, which uses 1.8 T per max range jump, the clipper has a class 5 FSD, which uses 5 T per max range jump.

So the courier can do 4 max range jumps on one tank of gas, and the clipper can do 3.

Pure exploration = Courier (without weapons, stripped down to the max)

Armed exploration = Clipper (with all weapons and gadgets you can fill in)

so for me, it's clearly the Clipper

So its gonna be the Courier until they put dangerous stuff out there?

With the new fuel tanks that can be fitted in internal compartments, the clipper might just be an option.
The clipper has more than enough compartments to spare to fit extra fuel tanks. And with a lvl7 scoop, it sucks the life out of a sun and makes it a black hole!
So fuel is not a problem anymore.

But then again the jump range is horrible.
I tried some exploration in a clipper but quickly decided that the Asp is a way better ship for that. But that's another topic.

Between the clipper and courier the jump range is not a very big difference.
The cockpits I can't compare yet, but they both have open top views.

For pure exploration this courier

It has all you need out there.
Just don't jump in into any USS's. ;)

Or a clipper

And you could give it an even bigger fuel tank!
You could also equip a fuel transfer limpet controller so you could help fellow explorers who ran out of fuel.
So the extra slots of the clipper weighs in it's favour.

You could argue about weapons and shields and more fancy stuff, but if you explore more than a few k ly's away from "civilized" space, you really don't need that stuff.
(I've added the shields because I just want to make sure that when I dock I'll end up docked instead of in 1000 pieces floating around in the station.)

But in the end, the choice is also your personal flavour. Remember, you'll be living in there for months on end, so it better be a nice view (and sound).

Wizz you are giving bad advice.

Always run 2A plant. If you are going to run shield, run lowest D class you fit. If you are going to run boost distributor, run lightest that lets you boost.

Argument on shields is not fancy. Look at my sig. I am exploring in 14.4 ly range full armed FDL. What will happen when i will have a bad day? Somebody could have a bad luck.
There was a some bad guy in Sgr A* last days. He shoot down a few explorers in paper ships.

Exploration ship should be fast in sublight (good thrusters, good boost) and have some shields - it need to survive a 15 seconds of FSD charging time.
Of course it means a bit bigger mass and a bit worse jump range. But remember, greed my kill you.

You do not need a combat ship, but space is dangerous, you need be aware that. You should be able to RUN.

Bad advice? That's all relative.
I would call a 15ly jump range explorer bad advice.

Besides, my examples where purely build for long range exploring and for comparison purposes between Clipper and courier. Exactly what this thread is about.
And as I mentioned, don't enter USS with it.
So what's bad on that advice?
This thread isnt a discussion thread about what you should bring when going to explore or what class of upgrades you should buy. The topic is about clipper vs courier.

I do know a bit about exploring. I've done a 60.000ly trip and encountered 0 ships.
Yes, I've read about the griefer in Sag-A. But I call that bad luck which can be easily be prevented by going solo.
No use for open play anyways in deep space.

So before you accuse me of giving bad advice please add some content which contributes to this topic.

Space is not dangerous. There's nothing out there that can kill except stars and black holes.
But I do agree, once they make space more dangerous (Thargoids anybody?) then for sure, get a decent ship which is capable to defend itself.
As soon as that happens I will explore again, But now it's just plain boring grinding without any fear. The first 1000 systems are nice, but then it become a repitive grind.
Unless you call running into black holes dangerous.

*sorry for going of topic here*
