it's not a sequel... but it's involved in some way with the cloverfield movie... all this movies are part of a bigger thing but JJ want's to keep it secret... he said audience to do not expect to see a continuation here of cloverfield.

Yes, just set in the same universe. I suspect it's what happens after Marlena exploding bugs take over. Still, seems worth watching.
