Clueless Console Convert seeking advice.

Hello CMDRs,
I am looking into buying a desktop for the eventual switch to PC and Odyssey; problem is that I am pretty much clueless about builds and specs.

I've read quite a bit about what other CMDRs are using and have advised on but to be honest it's overheated my tiny organic processing unit..

I'm from U.K. and looking to spend £600-800. Not looking at pre-built PCs much but did see these specs on a PC build site:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • GIGABYTE GA-A320M-S2H V2
  • 8GB PCS PRO DDR4 2666MHz
  • 2GB GEFORCE GT 1030 - DVI, HDMI
  • 1TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA HDD
  • 256GB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD
Tried configuring my own on this site too but it mostly guesswork as to what I was adding😆 Might need better graphics card at least?

Any advice on the above would be much appreciated o7

I think you're right to want a faster graphics card, as a reasonable minimum I suggest looking for an Nvidia 1060 6GB (not the 3GB version).

8GB of system RAM might be enough but get 16GB if you can (2x8GB sticks).

The HDD & SSD sizes are fine, personally I'd avoid Seagate & look for a WD (Western Digital) brand, that's just personal experience though.

Not sure on the specs of AMD CPUs but I think you're probably okay on performance & it just depends how much you can afford after factoring in a more expensive graphics card.

Building a PC from components is fun ;)

With the current price situation your budget is almost daring.

Elite is not nice to both cpu and gc (due to bad programming). Whatever the developers are going to do it will be hardware hungry. If you want to have no worries about future updates to the game and want some sort of fluid gameplay on planet surfaces you gonna nead a bigger boat.

I made a pcpart list thats almost your budget https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/DTmrwc

Its future proof for elite dangerous.

ED eats about 3-4 GB RAM and uses roughly 8 GB VRAM. 1060-6GB is stretching it.

Anything with less than 16 GB RAM and 8 GB VRAM will struggle with foot content.

The list provided by Alkibiades sounds reasonable.

Thanks guys, I thought £600 was a bit low and will have to look into the info you've given a bit more, definitely a better graphics card needed (at least lol).

Thanks for the parts list too, my eyes started crossing together halfway through it but much appreciated.

I'm not looking for the best performance but if I can get 60fps in most places it will still be an improvement in my eyes from console.

Looks like you're trying to order from PCSPECIALIST? I can tell by the pixels 'PSC' branded memory.

Anyway, a quick look a PCS' site tells me that the best thing I can build for 800 GBP is rather borderline for Odyssey. So, I'd recommend holding off for two months for next gen stuff to hit and prices to fall a bit further.

Nice spot lol, it was more to try and gauge what I could get for my budget but after other people's input and Alkibiades' part list they put together I'll be giving it a lot more thought.

Good point about the next gen stuff too, just hope the money can stay in my bank account long enough🤣
