The Empire-aligned system of HR 783 is a relative backwater system in the galaxy, circa 150LY away from the Imperial capital of Achenar. Whilst HR 783 itself is a substantial system, being home to 1.7bn citizens and hosting 3 stations and 1 outpost, the surrounding systems, the majority of which are independent with a smattering of Empire and Federation-aligned systems, predominantly host only a few million souls, and even less for some of the independents. HR 783 is at its heart an industrial system, but Rich Orbital is a massive agricultural station providing all food needs for the region as well as offering good profits on tobacco, marine equipment and imperial slaves for those looking to make some money.
The ruling faction is the HR 783 Imperial Society which has pledged itself to supporting the aspirations of the Empire. Roth Hub, the closest industrial station to the sun, asks its citizens to bask in the emperor’s glory, which seems more poignant these days following the assassination of the Emperor before his wedding. There are several corporate factions active in the system but none can compete with the Imperial Society who often has control ratings of 80% and above. Historically the Society minded its own business and was happy to control this system and generate the profits, but in circa February 3301 a sole traveller happened into the system on a small smuggling mission that was to change the course of the neighbouring region as a whole.
Commander Stephen Gordon had picked up a mission to transport combat stabilisers from nearby Tlapana to Roth Hub in his Cobra MkIII. The ship had seen better days after a long trip from Thrutis where Stephen inherited the vessel, the Gopher, from his parents when they retired. An explorer by nature, Stephen had always supported the Imperial way of life and wanted to live closer to those who shared his beliefs on how society should operate. With no Empire systems around Thrutis a good FSD and fuel scoop were attached to the Gopher and a direction was picked. After trading his way to Tlapana, a profitable mission to HR 783 was acquired that would allow for more upgrading to be done to the ship. After delivering the product Stephen relaxed at The Empire Bar, famous in the system as the best place to lose yourself for a few hours!
It was at this bar that Stephen met Xenish Dukarna, the daughter of rich local merchant Arkan Dukarna who made his money in imperial slaves and precious metals. Stephen and Xenish immediately became friends, but when the exploration urge hit Stephen it seemed like the timing was wrong. They kept in contact during Stephen’s absence, sporadically at first but as the mission went deeper into unchartered territory it became clear that there was something between the two and after 3,500LY of exploration Stephen returned to HR 783 to start a relationship with Xenish. After only 2 months the couple were married with Xenish’s two daughters as bridesmaids, by which point trading had allowed Stephen to acquire an Imperial Clipper, which particularly please Arkan and showed that Stephen could pay his way and take care of the family. Xenish is now pregnant and the couple are expecting a boy.
Whilst Stephen was busy getting married, HR 783 encountered a couple of boom periods and significant profit growth for the Imperial Society. Public minutes show that on 14th March 3301 the faction constitution was amended to allow for expansion, and within weeks the Society had established branches in nearby Tlapana (Independent industrial) and Medziojin (Federal extraction and refinery) systems. Stephen responded to this situation by adding Tlapana to his trading network and by focussing solely on Imperial Society missions the faction expanded its influence. A brief civil war with a corporate faction saw the Society take control of Delaney Enterprise, an industrial outpost in Tlapana, which was ideal for Stephen as he had recently acquired a Python which would be able to land at the outpost. Using Delaney as a base the missions continued and it became clear that the Society’s growth was causing tension with the ruling Tlapana Electronic Solutions (TES) faction.
After numerous attacks on Imperial traders TES formally declared war on the Imperial Society in order to rid the Empire from the system. However, this move backfired catastrophically as Cmdr Gordon took charge of an Imperial battle division in his battle-ready Python, the INS Victory. Battles were frequent and short as Stephen repeatedly defeated system authority vessels from Anaconda’s to Sidewinders, wearing down the TES fleet until finally they surrendered and control of Cantor Gateway, the primary station in the system, was passed to the Imperial Society. Stephen was rumoured to have cashed in over 10m credits in combat bonds but this has never been confirmed or denied, although the Victory was seen soon after the conflict with shiny new armour plating.
After another brief exploration project that lasted barely a week, Cmdr Gordon returned to his family in HR 783 to find the system in chaos. The Imperial Society was struggling to recover after the Tlapana war and other factions had increased their influence to take advantage. Responding to this Stephen loaded up the Victory again and went after all ships aligned with the other factions, with the explicit blessing of the Imperial Society. Over a few weeks the natural order of the system was restored and Cmdr Gordon was honoured with the Imperial Order of Eagle, giving him free reign in space controlled by the Imperial Society.
This space has recently expanded to include Medziojin, a small extraction system of circa 50k people that had previously been under Federation control. Whilst the Imperial Society has been growing steadily, a sudden attack from the ruling Alliance of Medziojin plunged the system into war. As with Tlapana, Cmdr Gordon responded with force, by now the proud owner of an A-spec Python with military grade composite armour, a warship fit for the occasion. The federal navy took such a battering that after only 2 days of war, with a single combat zone, control of Cooper Settlement, the control outpost, had passed to the Imperial Society. The warzone is still active but there is really only federal blood being shed and the resistance will not last long.
The HR 783 Imperial Society, helped immeasurably by Cmdr Stephen Gordon, now controls 3 systems. Are we witnessing the birth of a future power faction?
