CMDR survival

Will we end up with CMDR survival, were we need food and drink every so many days etc, maybe finding sources of food and water on planets will be a thing.
or we stock up with certain things on ships before we head out into the black.

just asking as star citizen is looking to introduce something, will ED have something similar if we are getting space legs.

I know, nobody know if we are.

im just wondering would we like this, i would./

i also play Conan Exciles which has something similar as well

My best guess right now is that spacelegs will give us the option to interact with the coffee machine and other food prep appliances in our ship's galley, but it will not be required for a player to do so. This would give players who want to completely immerse themselves in the world of ED the option to do so, but would not add tedium for people who just want to fly spaceships or whatnot (they can always just handwave and say that their character eats/sleeps/whatever when they're logged off).

Feature creep is part of the reason SC is still in beta, may always be a beta until the money finally runs dry.

Not really interested in legs survival aspects. Hard enough just keeping the ship alive sometimes.

Would be nice but people are too spoiled by the way the game lets people do things. "If you want realism, play life", or "go play one of those games, then" is the typical rude reply.

Your CMDR has seen too many lasers, is now blind

Your CMDR hasn't socialized enough, will now refuse to take Missions due to depression and lack of motivation

Your CMDR hasn't gotten up and stretched enough, you have developed Carpal Tunnel, impacting your response time

You CMDR hasn't defecated recently, you have died from internal poisoning

You have to draw the line with realism somewhere and with ED being a Spaceship game, drawing the line at Spaceships is the perfect response. I know I didn't buy a Spaceship simulator to worry about my in-game Pilot's caloric intake.

survival game elements always sound fun, but I always end up being annoyed by them.

when I go exploring, I take a canister of beer, meat, coffee, fruit/veg etc. that’s prettymuch the most I want to be bothered by “survival” mechanics

Genius!

I also love the application of space legs for rearming every one of your 8 multicannons in a Conda by foot, in small increments of 20 kg because
otherwise your CMDR gets muscle ache and gets an automatic agility malus.

Or the application of space legs to empty your waste bins.

Fantastic (y)

That's what multicrew is for. Who wouldn't want to do manual labor in the bowels of a ship while the pilot has all the fun?

For me personally, I actually think some LIGHT survival mechanics would be nice, specifically for exploring. I know some will disagree.

There's just so little to do out there, some extra layers of stuff to look out for and a requirement to keep supplies topped up wouldn't be unwelcome.

Even just gathering materials for life support systems (not the emergency refill, but an oxygen tank to keep filled) and nutrition. Not a constant pressure and hassle, just something needing done every few hours or days of flight time, to add to the feeling of owning and maintaining a complex starship far from civilisation, and another reason to keep one eye on materials in the system map. To give the feeling of being independent and looking after your own needs away from society's umbilical cord.

Of course, they would need to make the required materials more accessible to non-Horizons players who may be in the black without a mining laser. Perhaps they could be also collected from the tails of comets or something.

Oxygen and nutrition could even be refilled automatically every time we land at a station, so it'd be a non-issue in the bubble.

Realismwise such survival mechanics would make absolutely no sense at all.

Let's say you cargo an abstract ton of survival food - that should sustain a single human being for years. And as for oxygen, 34th century faster than light ships with magickal synthesis lab, but no air scrubbers or water recycling? The canopy breaking thing is already pretty damn unrealistic thing (I get it, gameplay excitement).

And speaking about survival on long exploration trips, it would again raise the poignant question - why would anyone on a long voyage just do a few hours of work tops in a day, have extended weekends and in general idle the vast majority of the week if the oxygen and food meter kept on ticking down?

No aspect of the game makes any sense by that incredibly high standard of realism.

Lots of things "pause" when you're AFK, cargo instantly loads and unload, you can carry masses of materials around in your pocket, lasers and bullets have a dropoff like in an atmosphere, etc. etc. We even suspend our disbelief to allow for human piloting to not be completely redundant in 3306.

It's fine if you don't like it, but the idea isn't thematically inconsistent or jarringly irreconcilable with how the rest of it works.
