CMDR <unprintable characters>

There's a CMDR out there whose name shows as a series of blank squares followed by 3 number characters (I might almost call them "beastly" numbers ).

He vanished from my screen and radar:( while I was typing a message to him. He left without leaving a white jumpout square marker - instancing problems or disconnect?

All very strange.

Jeez, are people still spreading this nonsense? @Op - Apparently it is to do with the characters used (Russian/Japanese etc) I'll try to find the post explaining it.

That makes sense. The Russian alphabet has 33 characters, while the Japanese alphabet has considerably more.

So it works against NPCs now?

It always has, there is a slight differences with how it works with humans vs NPC's, range seems to be one of the main factors hence the cheating comments you'll see on here. It has all been discussed to death, one factor to keep in mind is that NPC's also use the MK1 Eyeball.

Interesting, didn't knew that. Do you have a link or a title for a thread about that?

This is where VR is both a help and a hindrance. You can park up and look around (without having to move the ship much, depending on the view from the cockpit), but the lower resolution means that some small/distant objects might not get noticed.

It depends on the Cyrillic\Japanese\Chinese etc character support, not on the number of characters :)
The engine offers at least a partial support of Cyrillic characters (there is a Russian version after all), but only partial - it was obviously not written with anything except Latin in mind. Chat does not support Cyrillic, and some words in Russian version are cut due being too long (known problem with many Russian versions of Western games).

Tbh I haven't had any issues on the DK2 as far as resolution, you can crank up Super sampling if your GPU can handle it, CV1 & Vive will also give an additional boost. @Becks - Pages and pages on the subject all over the forum, search function is your best option.

To the OP: this week i encounter one human player with a name formed only with unprintable characters. He tried to tell me something in chat but i get only garbage. Also the guy was ......... how can i say this, a serial combat logger. So if your commander just disappeared in space without trace, most probably he logged out.

Michael Brookes confirmed that back in beta... silent running significantly reduces an npc's chance to pick you up on their scanners, but within a certain range they have a chance to locate you visually. It doesn't make you "scan-proof", just harder to see.

I wonder if he engaged 'Silent Running'?
Good thought, but no. I was typing a question to him but it failed when I tried to send it because there was no one there to send it to.

"Nonsense"? No, not really. I was an early backer. I've been playing a long time, in Open, and I can't recall seeing a CMDR's name like that.

Oh. Ok. I'm surprised that character sets are allowed to be used for entering CMDRs names when they can't be displayed in-game. Not that it would help if they could be displayed of course, as I wouldn't know what the characters represented anyway.:S

I saw a chap like that the other day.
In my home station winged with a CMDR from the Polish Group on INARA.
So presumably just Cyrillic not displaying in-game.
(uh - I know Polish doesn't use Cyrillic but those CMDRs of the East stick together.)

It would be nice if FDev had a font set that displayed completely in-game.

I'd love to see Japanese and Cyrillic and Hebrew and Thai in the adds on the docks and everywhere.
The players are polyglot - the game should be too.
