(Not sure anyone has mentioned this, searching came up empty)
With the upcoming passenger thing (the shape of which is of course a bit unclear yet), there would be an "easy" way to solve the "I'm here, the ship I want to switch to is there" problem.
Let us CMDRs book a passage!
So, in station services, you could book a flight from *here* to some station.
"But we'd have to wait for a flight then!" Yup. But... firstly, I'd assume there were NPCs doing passenger service too. So you wouldn't have to wait for a CMDR to come to your backwater station to pick you (anonymously, or at least unidentifiably) up and carry you to your destination (or at least partway... that's the very, very slightly tricky bit).
I could even see both such a service *and* a ship delivery service in parallel: the second would mean you'd not have to wait around any (but you'd still have to wait for your ship), so you could still fly in the current ship while waiting for delivery. *But* it would be more risky, and more expensive. I mean, travelling as a passenger would be as "cheap" as for all the NPCs, and no-one would know that *you* (or in fact, any CMDR) were on board (people still finding out your identity by some means (espionage of various types) and then using this knowledge for nefarious purposes could add another angle/level to the game). But the NPC(?) would know how much the ship they're delivering is worth... so, you'd certainly pay a fee in proportion to the ship's worth.
