Cobra 3 Top Speed

Hey guys I'm in the throes of engineering my lil cobra to be a fast passenger/smuggling crate and wondered if there was anywhere I could work out the fastest speed (and boost) I can hope to get.

A bit ago I stripped down most of my modules for the fsd range including thrusters but am wondering if the strip down adds enough for it to be "better" than more speed.

Similarly I'm aiming to be lighter than the optimal mass right?

Ideally you would aim for less than minimum mass to achieve maximum speed - but between min and optimum you will see benefits. Remember that DD5 with Drag / Distributors may yeild surprising results :)

The one I use as taxi boosts at about 600m/s, has about 450-500MJ shields.. even if you strip it it's not gonna be as fast as Courier or Eagle. So if you want speed, Cobra is not the best choice.

This is true, but they want it for Pax / smuggling, so I guess the actually correct answer is 'fit a heatsink'. Then maybe engineer for a +1 heatsinks, but otherwise you are done, pop a H/S when you hear 'scan detected', job done :)

Find a planet that is about 2G and then drop out of SC, at about 150 to 200 Km above said planet. Then point the nose straight down and boost. 1,000ms, is very possible.

That said: Speed or power is nothing, without control. I have been using my Cobra III, for smuggling in one form or another. basically since day one. No engineers required. Sit 10km out, line up the slot and boost your way in. Don't forget to ask for docking permission, as soon as you pass 7.5kms and nothing can stop you.

I should also point out that I use a Cobra IV for smuggling passengers. Again; no engineering and a top boost speed of 306ms, still does the trick. It is more about, using the radar and being aware of who and what is around you.

There is no way you will hit the minimum mass (183 t) for 4A G5 Dirty drag thrusters with a Cobra. A completely stripped down Cobra can achieve over 660 boost while still a good ~20 tons over minimum mass, and just can't drop any more weight.

Whether or not a weight reduction is worth the gain in speed is entirely up to you and what you want from your build. High 500's should be easy to hit, with 600's being attainable if you feel the need to further prioritize speed over other options.

This.
Pythons, Cutters ... any ship. They can all be boosted into stations without being scanned or any need for hyper engineering or heat sinks etc

Heatsinks do come in handy when smuggling to surface bases, but yes - rarely needed for space, except when I decide to boost into the toast-rack, which is always fun :)

thats viper 3, not cobra 3. top speed for a cobra is with a 4A (no size 4 enhanced, even a 3a enhanced g5 dirty/drag is slower than a 4a g5 dirty/drag.

best i can tell, totally stripped and still able to boost you're looking at about 656~

Sorry, was replying to a post about a V3, and I'll say most of that thread has more to do with performance enhanced thrusters, but there's still a lot of good info (or links to it) in there for building any ship for speed.
