Ships Cobra 49er

Too many Prospectors. You get higher yields with A. You can hold extra tons in refinery bins. Moving is a major part of mining so better thrusters. You may wish you had better shields and thrusters if a pirate finds you.

You have 2 prospectors, but only 1 collector. It should be the other way around.

You need to A rate the prospector, it will give you more fragments from the rock.

A rate the PD or you'll be spending a lot of time waiting for your mining laser to recharge.

A second mining laser will speed up the fragment extraction considerably, but 2 medium will drain the PD too quickly, so try a small as second (you can turn it off if it still drains too fast)

If credits are limited, drop the shield boosters to D or C.

Updated build here

Also, if you're new to mining, try This to find pristine sites for better yields

Better this.

You really need to use A-rated prospectors. Otherwise you lose a lot of fragments
And a better pp and pd
And a PDT - some pirates might shoot hatchbreakers - and they go for 500 m/s with really impressive acceleration.

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it. The two prospectors were a typo, so per your advice, this it what I came up with.

Also, and even more important, she really looks the part doesn't she?

Notice the "mostly penniless" decal on the front. Would be funnier if it wasn't true.

What I like about the Cobra for mining is that it forces you to forgo the automatic docking and cruise assist.
It has been a while since I put her down on the pad myself, so wish me luck.

My first mining run was fun, but it didn't make me rich.
Went to a resource site, found lots of low value stuff, but not much else. It kept clogging up the refinery, so they wound up on the ignore list.
Finally did manage to refine one (1) tritium and that nearly got me killed.
Landed safely though.

I fill the Cobra up with 32 limpits as most of the limpits are spent prospecting.
LFT 65 did not contain a pristine metal ring and it didn't yield much either.

Just got back from a painite hotspot in a metal rich ring, except there wasn't any painite. So in the end I returned with some lower value stuff. Got 75 kcr for my trouble.

What rocks should I concentrate on? What percentages are acceptable for mining?

Need a bit of help guys. What am I doing wrong? 😕

  • Go in Hyades Sector DB-X d1-112, Planet 2, Ring A (i hope you have good internet, it is full of carriers)
  • Scan the ring with the DSS
  • Find the overlap of the painite hotspots.
  • Now there are 2 variants: try to drop in the middle of the overlap area or try to drop in one of the centers.
  • You may want to test both scenarios. Shoot prospectors at random rocks - find painite with more than 20% primary material or more than 30% secondary material
  • laser them out
  • rinse and repeat, eventually abandon some limpets to make room for painite
  • when full find a station to sell - see below - but if no station is close enough, you can sell anywhere. No point to risk to get stranded or to get nailed by pirates

Thanks, that did the trick. Made over 25 Mcr mining painite.
I'll name my first born after you.

Nah, i don't deserve that.

It's more of a curse than a blessing this thing that i cast upon you.
Now any other way of making credits will seem petty and unrewarding...

My first born didn't mind, but his wife and kids vetoed my suggestion. So I'll name my next limpet after you then.
I'll just mine as little as I can get away with. The Cobra is perfect for that as it doesn't take long to fill the hold.

Hotspots also affect core and SSD distributions. It is just that you cannot laser mine painite in metal rich rings. This does not mean you cannot do other types of mining for painite.

Thanks for clearing that up. So what's the next step after laser mining then? And can it be done in a Cobra?
Is the pulse wave analyser useful when laser mining?

LFT 65 has a pristine metallic ring around planet 4, it's my usual mining spot. Just wondering, did you try the inner ring (a)? The outer (b) ring isn't metallic, it's rocky (I think).

Next step is core mining - making rocks go boom!
A cobra is ideal - enough slots for the tools, but you won't have a huge hold to fill. You'll need seismic charges, abrasion blaster and a PWS. There's also the sub-surface missile, but I've never really used it as it didn't work well in the past. If you want to, you can keep the mining laser in case you run across something worthwhile like Painite or LTDs

PWS isn't useful for laser mining, it highlights cores, surface deposits etc that mining lasers can't touch

ETA: If you do go for core mining, have a look at a couple of guides on Youtube as it helps to know what you're looking for with the PWS.

Will I be able to target painite only?

Core mining requires a different mindset. And a different ship
Go for A rated PWS (they are really power hungry). This should do it

The average distance between cores is somewhere between 30-50 km. So boost alot while using the PWS
Watch some YT videos on how to spot the core asteroids (really bright yellow ones)

And fill up on limpets... you'll use a lot until you get the hang on spotting them cores.

Edit: and yes. A deep core painite asteroid when properly exploded will yield between 11-17 tons of painite. And nothing else.

Mining is not the most inspiring part of the game, so I'll stick to laser mining and mix it up with combat.
Got to mine 500 ore to unlock Selene Jean.
