Cobra faster than Viper?

So, i tried Viper today.
I have a maxed A cobra, and i decided to try Viper this evening.
I bought viper and upgraded everything to grade A expect few components to get rid of any extra weight.

I undocked and went for a test flight, and i was terribly dissapointed. Max speed with four pips in engines on viper was 304m/s, cobras was 310m/s
Max boost speed was 411 on viper, Cobra 442.

I'm not 100% sure, but pretty sure that cobra even has better turn rate than viper.

So did i do something wrong why my viper was slower and worse in every way?

Personally i feel like viper should get a minor boost. They nerfed it way too much from beta phase.

Cobra is faster. Lots of people still think the Viper is the fastest, but it isn't. Not to mention the Cobra can maintain a nice speed without sacrificing much at all, unlike the Viper. The Cobra has a better pitch turning rate than the Viper, especially when you factor in most Cobra setups are well below the Cobra's thruster optimal weight. The Viper has better vector thruster control (left, right, up, down thruster control), faster deceleration and acceleration.

Probably because Cobra has a higher rating powerplant than Viper overall. Powerplant does affect top speed somewhat I find.

However problem is also you are talking about 4PIPs in engine. That's not always a useful comparison, as 4PIPs is not combat speed, it is top speed. In combat you will not often have chance to 4PIP your engines if you want your weaps to remain firable and shields to stay up longer, so most often you will be 4PIPing between guns and shields but not so much engines.

Viper could use some love. It's a dedicated fighter. There's nothing wrong with it being the fastest ship in the game, like it used to be. Something has to be the fastest.

Power Plants don't have anything to do with top speed beyond module weight. Weight, and your thrusters (and Optimal Weight/Weight ratio), and arguably your Power Distributor (for the case of how often you can boost) do.

The top speed is top achievable boost speed. If a Player Viper and Player Cobra fight the Cobra pilot can flee from the Viper, or chase the Viper down. The Viper is more or less powerless to stop him. If the Viper pilot is actually using a combat setup, he'll be going around 400 boost, and the Cobra will be going somewhere around 430.

my viper does 339 with 4 pips in eng and boosts to 424.

It has a mass of 91T

You can't just put everything on the viper and hope its quick, weight is its enemy, get rid of the 9T armour for a start.

i find my viper changes speed faster, which means i get back to perfect turn speed sooner than i would in my cobra. i really like this advantage and always enjoy getting back in the viper when i fancy doing some assassination missions. also the weapon grouping is near perfect, another little perk that makes flying the ship more enjoyable.

it's odd how many trivial perks these ships can have that make them feel different to fly. in most games you just grab the biggest number and be done with it. in elite i keep my eagle because the feeling of dogfighting is brilliant, especially with head tracking and the perfect visibility through the canopy. i keep my viper because i love how she flies and fights. i keep my cobra because i like her versatility when i'm running generic missions and want some decent guns on. i'm enjoying my new type 6 as i love the cockpit (docking is a joy with a glass floor) and i like the way you see the retro thrusters fire past the cockpit when you slam on the brakes.

never before have i played a game where i have so many odd reasons to keep a different ship/car/etc.

You pegged the ships spot on ReaperAlex!! I feel that exact same way.

Viper is faster with normal speed. Cobra is faster on boost.
Viper(343/424) Cobra(318/454)

They really need to rethink on the Eagle and Viper. Dedicated combat ships are being outperformed in combat by jack of all trades Cobra.

Frankly, after testing both in combat the Viper feels to me like it got way more survivability than the Cobra (without shield cells).

Cobra has 2 more internal compartments than a viper. Same size and number of weapons. Same number of utility mounts.

Given pilots of equal high skill I suspect the Viper will win out more often than not. The vertical and lateral thruster movement ability of the Viper is an enormous advantage in the hands of a skilled pilot, the acceleration and deceleration are much better than the Cobra has, and the weapon placements are far superior.

If you get a couple noobs jousting, the Cobra will probably win.
