Cobra III vs Cobra IV opinion

The mk IV simply does not deserve the "cobra" name. its too slow and not agile enough. But its a nice starter mining and trading ship.

So there is a simple solution for the cobra mk IV controversy: change the skin, rename it into "hauler mk II" and everybody will be happy.

I disagree, it is deserving of the Cobra name. Why? Cobras are the definitive multi-role ships (not racing cars) and the Mk IV excels in that sense.

If you ask around what the cobra is famous for, the first answer will be "speed". The second answer will pobably be "multirole".
The mk IV is one of the slowest ships in the game, even a T7 is faster and less agile than a hauler. Due to the lack of speed and agility it is not a multirole ship. it is a trader, miner, nothing more. You can do light combat missions in it, but thats something you can also do in a sidewinder.

I posted this on Reddit a wee while back, though I'd share it here too :

On my way back from Empire space to pick up my MK III Cobra, I stopped for fuel in the iCourier (great ship btw, my new favourite fighter), and having a browse in the shipyard, noticed the MK IV for sale.

Thought what the hell, and bought it. A-rated everything, 3 gimballed beams & 2 medium gimballed multi-cannons and continued on my way to Widows Light to pick up the MK III.

And... sold it when I got there.

Interdicted by a dangerous DBS and an Elite Inperial Eagle. Had to run from the DBS, and the iEagle gave me serious problems before I eventually destroyed it. 320 m/s A- rated boost and horrendous turning ability vs high rated NPC's being a decent challenge now ( a very good thing), but not much fun in the Mk IV.

Yes yes, I know it's not a fighter, but the combination of no speed and no agility means it's felt unsafe and vulnerable, to say the least. Shame as the hardpoint placement and convergence is excellent. On the rare occasion you can bring them to bear.

So a disappointment really. A MK III with the Mk IV hardpoints? Now that would be quite something.

To some, to others, we few, we happy few, the Mk IV is a great ship.

We agree, brother! :)

The Mk IV is better at combat than the Mk III IME. Speed and agility are not the only factors to consider and given some people seem to do (IMO) idiotic things such as trying to run with lower class shields than ships are designed for and then claim those ships are useless leaves me speechless.

Personally, I think this whole debate is ridiculous but I do strongly believe that the Cobra Mk IV is worthy of the cobra name and is also balanced as it should be - making it faster or more agile is totally unnecessary and to do so would make it OP or at least OP for the price (which is less than a million). The Mk IV is very capable ship for the price point.
