Newcomer / Intro COBRA MK III best builds? please help this newcomer!

Hi everyone! I'm new in ED and first of all excuse my english. I'll try to explain myself properly.

I played for 32 hours now trying to figure things out and now I just bought a new cobra ship. :D

the thing is that I'm having a hard time understanting ship parts combinations for X purposes.b

any suggestion for an optimal cobra? like builds for hunting or mining, etc.

thanks in advance! :)

You can make 2 million an hour using a Sidewinder in a high RES helping the feds kill wanted ships, so it's very easy to buy more ships. I would buy ships that are optimal for the task you want to do rather than adapt a multi-role ship. That means get a Viper for anything to do with combat, then a Vulture, then FDL. For exploring, you can use a Cobra, but after a few evenings play with a Sidewinder, you'd have enough for a DBX, which is a lot better. The Cobra is quite good for missions because it's quite fast. Don't fit any weapons, just submit and run from any interdictions, which saves wasting a lot of time fighting when you could be making money. A build like this. With 450m/s, no NPC will be able to catch you:

Passenger missions are where the money is, so you could swap all the cargo racks for economy passenger comprtments, though you need to keep 4 units/tons of cargo capacity for mission rewards otherwise they don't offer you some missions (ridiculous).

I wouldn't bother mining until you have enough credits for an Asp or Python.

You can use just about any ship for anything. I did triple elite, King, Admiral and 3 billion credits in a Sidewinder in a few months. Using optimised ships just does it faster. There's no question that some ships are better at some tasks than others.

Welcome aboard Commander!

Some general tips - D-rated modules weigh the least - which helps with jump range. So opt for D-rated scanner, life support.

Don't overlook the power distributor, it's as important as the power plant, FSD and thrusters. A-rate them all if you can. For combat I'd suggest a mix of gimbled burst lasers and multi-cannons. Look at Vindicator Jones' videos as well - this one is very helpful about combat with small ships - and note that you can target sub-systems in the ship you are attacking.

When you get a bit more money don't overlook the Type-6 - it's very versatile, fast, with good internal spaces - and it can make a very decent passenger ship.

For more hints I suggest the 'ships of elite' section, and 'Alec's best of the forum'. Both are well worth your time.

Combat in a Cobra is OK but it is not what it is really for so other ships are better so I would not focus on using a Cobra for combat.
For mining it is just big enough to give mining a go but a bit limited if you are going to use both prospector and collector limpets.
It is good for running cargo, missions and rare trading. T6 is a better pure trade ship and a Viper a better pure combat ship.

The Cobra MK3 can do anything in the game, but may not always be the most efficient at specific jobs. It's a great ship, and the speed is it's main advantage over ships like the Viper, Dolphin, DBX etc.

I use this build currently: https://eddp.co/u/AoVcchvZ

It's good for general mission running, assassinations, RES hunting, material gathering, exploration (and Fuel Ratting, hence the fuel limpet controller, swap it out for something else).
However it does have quite a bit of engineering, but it's essentially my end-game ship, as it's way more fun to fly than the big fatties.

General rule of thumb is fit the optionals, weapons and utilities stuff for a task; D-rate life support and sensors, A-rate everything else. If you don't need the power, then drop the powerplant down to a 3A or 2A instead (A-rated power plants run much cooler than B-E). If you have no weapons than you can drop the distributor to provide just enough to boost.
eg: here's a non-engineered exploration build: https://eddp.co/u/E43rL5ml
