Cobra Mk III or Asp Explorer?

As a multipurpose, the ASP is a better ship, only losing to the Cobra on the speed department, as the Cobra is realhy fast.

The ASP has twice the cargo space, more compartments for modules, has 4 small weapon hardpoints instead os 2, and is more resilient to damage.

Also has an awesome view.

The ASP is a natural upgrade to the Cobra, and in the end, you are comparing a 300 thousand credits shipo with a 6 million cr ship.

The asp also has a 32ton fuel tank, which is great. And I love its growling sound.

For combat only, the Vulture is vastly superior to both the ASP and the Cobra. But if you want to do a little of everythoing, the ASP is the way to go. Be ready to spend some millions on upgrades though.

I agree. Althoug I prefer the ASP, the Cobra was my first "proper" ship in which I started fully enjoying the game.

Try an A grade Python for 320mil or a Combat Anaconda for 800mil.
ASP is still on the mid to low end of the scale, the tipping point occurs about the Clipper/Orca/Python level. :)

Fair go, but some of us don't play with big boys toys so such figures as you quote are so far out of our price range as to be not worth considering. Personally, I doubt I'll ever fly anything bigger than my Asp.

Like others have said it depends what you want to use it for but I had an Asp which was worth 21m I also have a Python and I'm saving for an Anaconda. At the moment I am exploring , doing the Sirius CG, and it struck me that even though the Asp is perfect for exploring I had 21m tied up in it and if all I was doing was exploring it does nothing a Cobra can't do. OK it can just a bit further with an A rated FSD than a Cobra but that's about all. I don't need the extra weapon slots so I sold it and bought myself a Cobra. My Cobra is worth 8m and I banked the difference. Haven't looked back, that said if you are involved in Powerplay and are in a busy part of space then the Asp can be a much more powerful combat ship than a Cobra. I did a lot of damage with my Asp. So it depends, for pure exploring the Cobra is fine and it's far superior at avoiding Interdictions. I haven't lost an Interdiction battle ever since I got my Cobra. Also it just feels more like Elite to me when flying my Cobra ;-)

If only there was a way to mod a ship to give it legs in the higher tiers ... I'd sacrifice an internal or pay 50 million credits if I could upgrade my weapon hardpoints. That's really all it needs to be able to play with the big boys.

The Cobra is my favorite ship too. Not just the look of it, which is kind of sleek and yet mean, but the sounds are hands down the best of all the ships I've flown. MAYBE the viper when its thrusters kick in can elicit the same feelings, but flying the cobra makes me feel like I'm driving a souped up muscle car, it's just a beautiful and masculine sound.

Totally different pricepoints. Cobra's a 300 k package, Asp is a 6 mill package.

With that said, the only thing comparable to the cobra at its price point is the Diamondback Scout.

Played with a Cobra for a longgggg time and loved it. Outfitted with A class components for about 8 mil and used it as a multi-purpose ship. Based on a thread similar to this, I bought an Asp and eventually outfitted to A class components for about 32 mil. Like it even more because of increased firepower -- can shred shields pretty fast with 4 small gimbaled pulses. And increased cargo space (80 tons vs 32 on the Cobra). And longer jump range (27 vs 22). So now I can jump from farming RES to hauling Rares to missions to exploring or mining. I know I could stick to any single activity and optimize the ship to jump further, be more effective in combat with more shield boosters, etc., but I just like doing whatever strikes my fancy at any particular session. So yeah, try the Asp.

I have both with all A grade kit, for me the ASP has it - more cargo space, more firepower, higher jump range ... ...

Both great ships though..
