cobra v asp..

greetings all.

I'm going to take this ship jumping and running..

but exploring.

why would I need an asp?

worst case I lose the ship..

320k max.

Because of your pathetic jump range. :)

Couple of tips:
Get class A FSD, class D power distributor, class D life support, class D sensor suite
and ditch the armour

EDIT: oops, noticed your balance - an Adder would be great exploration vessel if kitted right

25 light years is a good starting point for a deep space exploration vessel.
Then the fuel scoop, the bigger the better as you can refuel faster, refuel safer, and go back to exploring the stars.

The ASP is not the best exploration vessel but it is a good one. Unfortunately it is EXPENSIVE.

is it a mass thing? lower fuel tank etc?

You should drop mass, yes. Class D stuff is lightest. But to get best jump range, you have to go to top line FSD, namely class A.

What's considered the best explorer?

Lets see

Far stronger shields
Increase in cargo
More guns available
Massive buff to jump range
Better power distribution
More compartments available
2 additional utilities
Better view in cockpit for both combat and exploration
Can mass lock anything up to a Dropship. T9 included.

All for the single downside of some 60 m/ps loss of top speed.

Cobra is a really bad ship compared to the Asp.

I am using the Cobra but it is more of a mid-range explorer. My Cobra can do 15 LY jump. If you want long-range explorer where some star system requires a 20+ LY jump, ASP is the answer.

The Asp is everything the Cobra is only bigger x2. You have space for all your exploration and bounty hunting needs plus 80t cargo and can jump 25 - 30ly with 6 better positioned guns.

another question?

what stars can i refill from?

KGB FOAM!

I like the Asp for exploring because of the view, the entire cockpit is just a giant window (similar to the T6). Of course the Asp has a big price tag just to get in the door, and if you're going to scan everything then the wear and tear will cut way, way into your profits. So I wouldn't say you "need" an Asp. The real question is whether you want one, and from your post it sounds like you don't. :)

Good luck with your exploration, Commander. Go get your name stamped on the Galaxy!

Lose the guns!

No guns means less power, means lighter power plant, means longer jump range.

So you can easily get 25LY Range:

- No Med or Small Hardpoints
- Chaff Launcher
- Lightwaeight Alloys
- 3A Power Plant (12MW)
- 4A Thrusters
- 4A FSD
- 3D Life SUpport
- 3A Power Dist.
- 3D Sensors
- 3C Fuel Tank (8t) --> You have a Fuel Scoop
- 4A Fuel Scoop (or lower, whatever you can afford)
- 4A Shields
- Detailed SS
- Adv. Discovery Scanner

Uses 11.15 MW (93%) with max range 25.28LY and Min Range 24.74LY. Its a start :)

I'd add as many heat sink launchers as you can.

Sooner or later you'll end up next to a star, using one of these can bring the temperature down to reduce the overheating as the super cruise charges up.

If you can fit an auto repair module as well that can help (I understand that they can now fix thrusters etc)

Nope. The Cobra is better in many ways: Smaller target, lower running costs, 60m/s is a huge speed advantage and it carries 1/5 the financial risk of the Asp. In a fight with two equally skilled Commanders, I'd favour the Cobra. The Asp is clearly a better choice for exploration, with a jump range almost 30% higher, but only if you can afford the outfitting and running costs.

Cobras shields are trash tier, ends up spending more time running then anything.

Smaller target. Yay. Thats such a huge boon, considering its not much bigger profile wise. Same top down.

Cost is irrelevant.

Against two separate commanders, if the Asp is not an idiot, the cobra is going to run away. 60 m\ps not that huge of a boon. Only affects you when, guess what, you are chasing cobras. The real boon of the Asp is its ability to mass lock the T9, Clipper, T7, T6, ect.

There is a huge reason why its the go to pirate vessel once you stop being poor. Cobra is a trash tier ship once you have the means to pass it. A throwaway on par with the Viper. Only good for taking on anything up to the T6, which isn't much. Anything else is only humoring you with their time, since you can do exactly nothing to stop them from leaving.

Asp is a straight up upgrade from the Cobra.

Jump range is a bit low for a cobra. The Cobra I had before my ASP I used for exploration and trade and I had 22ly range at least, with guns.

Get a Type-6... seriously ! Great cockip view, good jump range ( around 24 Ly with A class FSD ) and much cheaper as an Asp. It is fun to Scout with it !
