Newcomer / Intro Cobra VS Viper VS Eagle, wich one would you go with, as a newbie.

how is this, for a start? F2 gimb pulse lasers x 2 and B1 heatseeker missiles x 2

It...works. I'll give you that.

It's okay for hunting NPCs, rather useless against Anacondas (because they usually carry Point Defense that shoots down missiles). I'm an okay-ish (Competent) pilot and I can make sure you won't get a solid lock on me.

Besides missiles are - afaik - rather expensive. Recommend switching to MC.

2 x Fixed Beams in medium mounts, 2 x Gimballed multi-cannons in small mounts.
It requires high rating PD and a large PP since the Beams are power hungry, but it chews up small crafts really fast.

i might do that sir, PM you for some sparring.
Pew! Pew pew!
BDS is going, but what do i put in here???
A kill warrant scanner.

However, with one of those, you get into a world of power-management pain. I use one, but I can only afford to do so because I compromised on sensors and shield - I figured that if no NPC in a non-heavyweight ship had ever made me use an SCB, I don't need the A3 shield generator. PVP is another matter though...

I go for 2x class 1 fixed beams and 2x class 2 gimballed MCs. It doesn't strip the shields quite as fast, but one clean pass after the shields go down will take out Eagles' and Sideys' hulls and bring a Cobra down to around 30-40%. I prefer that damage profile.

For combat, definitely Viper over Eagle.

From 12/16, I flew the Eagle for bounties until I could afford the Viper. A few weeks later, I've got an A-level Viper with all the toys. A couple nights ago, I was feeling nostalgic for the pure agility of the Eagle. I've got some spare cash, so I bought another Eagle and outfitted nearly everything to A/B levels except life support and the FSD. Flew to a combat zone and started engaging. And after a couple sorties, something struck me - how LONG it was taking to kill anything. The problem with the Eagle isn't just that it's made of glass, it's also that the weapon mounts are so small. So while it might take me a a couple of mins to really put some damage on an Asp, it was taking 10+ mins with the Eagle. Staying on the back of the target was no problem at all, but inflicting actual damage took forever. At one point I started to just disengage and give up trying to kill something with spitballs.

After a few kills, flew back to the station and sold it off. Was a nice "test", but now I realize the sentimentality I had of the Eagle doesn't measure up to the reality of one.

Yeah, I've had that problem in my Eagle when fighting larger ships and it takes me 10 minutes just to break through the shields. Then if you are lucky you do 10% hull damage before the shields come back up and you're back to square one. Really makes the combat tedious especially when the NPCs are so bad they can't even hit me unless I stand still for them.

Hey, when you sell a ship, does it say that you can sell it for MINUS some number? Like when I try to sell my Eagle that I got free from Frontier, it says it's worth around -40,000. Minus 40K?

It is the generic 'buy ship' screen. Suppose you have a 40k eagle. Twp scenarios:

1) You want to buy a 80k Adder and sell your eagle. Total cost is +40k.
2) You want to buy a 30k Sidewinder and sell your eagle. Total cost is -10k. Which means you get 10k.

I agree, it is a bit counter intuitive.

tanks a lot, guys. +1 to all of you.

thats it then, Viper it will be. further Down the road somewhere, i'll be looking for pvp. (cmdr's)
but first, i need combat experience against NPC's.

as far as weapons go, think i'll stick With gimbal, still a rookie combat pilot.
what am i going to do With fixed ones, when i can't hit anything haha. :)

again, thanks Commanders
you should rethink your fixed vs gimbaled loadout. In my viper I tried gimbaled beams on top and gimbaled multi ' s on the bottom and I found that my multi ' s were seldom on target. Once I switched to fixed beams on top my accuracy with the multi ' s was much better. I f you can hit your target with the beams your multi ' s will too. It also forces you to learn to be a better pilot, with more precise targeting. And as been said by others chaff will make your gimbaled weapons useless, fixed beams will will still get through, and once the chaff clears you can open up the multi ' s again

Are you suggesting one of those two-by-two loadouts, with, say, a pair of small, fixed beams, and a pair of medium, gimbaled multis? Currently, my Eagle has a pair of fixed beams and a missile pack, but I've been considering replacing it with either a fixed or gimbaled multi to practice for my Cobra (assuming my friend does trade).
