Cobra Weapon Setup

I just read that putting fixed weapons on a Cobra is a bad idea due to the hardpoints being so far apart. I didn't realise this. Whilst I don't want to go down a min/max route, what general suggestions do people have on weapons for a Cobra? I've tried a few laser/cannon setups, but they've all been... wonky. I've been toying with the idea of fixed lasers in one firegroup to take out shields, and gimballed kenetic in another firegroup for destroying the hull. Am I on the right path?

There is no definite answer but the reasons you present are valid. The top mounts, size 2, are close enough to each other to make fixed a viable option. Underside size 1 mounts are too far apart.

I do not use the same setup for piracy as I use for Conflict zones. Piracy ( especially NPCs given humans mostly just FSD off ) I use pure kinectic multicannon quads. Perfect for opening hatches.

For Conflict Zones nothing beats Rails and Cannons, but that's me. Size 1 rails are in a fire group with separate triggers so I can shoot one or the other depending on the aim. Cannons are single trigger on another fire group.

The energy + kinectic combo is a good all round option, so why not, but I advise you to spend ( a lot ! ) your hard earned credits experimenting a comfortable setup for each activity.

You are on the right path. The weapons that are too far apart are specifically the small class 1's that are mounted below. The pair of class 2's are not a real issue for that, they are close enough together to aim properly.
.
What I have been doing to get true balance between dropping shields and eating hulls is, I put one thermal, and one Kinetic weapon in each group. i.e. Small H/P's = 1 Gimbeled Multi-cannon and one Gimbleled Beam, and the same treatment for the class twos mounted above, except if you're a good pilot (I am not) you can used Fixed. Fixed versions of any weapon (that has a choice) are always cheaper and more powerful.
.
Some skilled pilots use one Gimbled class 1 bellow, and 3 Fixed weapons elsewhere. The one gimbeled weapon adjusts to aim as you line up with the Fixed weapons.

Gimb beam lasers on top, and missiles below.

pew, pew, fwssssshhh, fwssssshhhh, BOOM.

(just hope they don't have chaff)

Also medium fixed beams/pulses and small seeker missiles are a good workaround for the bad placement of small hardpoints.

Edit: streki was too fast! :)
