Newcomer / Intro Cockpit "swims" to the side when steering

A fellow Commander who just hopped into his brand new Sidey encountered a problem, and I cannot remember how to help (yes, somehow annoying):
When he tries to steer left/right with his mouse, the whole cockpit swings with the mouse movement. The ship moves as well, so it is not "free headlook mode" only.

Where mey he disable the "swimming" of his cockpit?

they can't

The only way to stop this false-g head movement is to use TrackIR or similar head tracking. However, it is possible to wind-out the field of view (FOV) in the Options / Graphics menu (move slider to the right) so that the cockpit elements remain more in-view

Ah, that is the trick! For I don't encounter this problem myself, so I certainly did that somewhere in the past ...
Thanks a bunch!!

Hi,
Quite possibly the controls need adjustment:-

IIRC, default is for left/right mouse to translate into yaw left/right, but there's also a setting "roll into yaw". That I found really disturbing.
My keyboard/mouse settings are for A and D to yaw, Q and E sideways thrust, mouse left/right for roll.
The view from the cockpit attempts to simulate the g forces on the pilot's head...

I'm still confused how mouse-headlook works. I do like from time to time to look out the cockpit at the lovely universe with the mouse, but I also more importantly, need to fly the ship with the HOTAs effectively.

I don't understand how with mouse look set to On, that randomly the whole thing sometimes ignores HOTAs input and you end up wildly looking at some random direction, which both makes you feel sick, and stops you doing vital cockpit operations like reading mission critical messages, and actually seeing where you are going?

And no, I'm not accidently knocking the mouse as I pilot my ship?

What am I doing wrong? Is it possible to have it mouse look and reset back to centre when not moving the mouse? It appears there are settings in the "Mouselook" menu in the options, but they don't seem to work intuitively?

Can someone please point me in the right direction for a thread. I just randomly picked on this one as it was fairly recent.

TIA

I cannot replicate your issue. If I am not using TrackIR (or have temporarily paused it) then I can use headlook (mouse and assigned hotas HAT switch) but still control my ship with the hotas axes, thruster axes, keyboard keys, etc. In fact there are times when I have not actually untoggled headlook and still have an off-centre view whilst piloting the ship (landing for example) - this is not recommended during combat!

There is a centre headlook command and also non-mouse headlook bindings (look below the mouse settings) - maybe you have something there which is causing your issue. There is also the headlook command under the mode switches section you can check.

My issue is - I don't have trackir (I don't have the hardware), but I want to use the mouse to "control my virtual head" to look at the lovely stars etc when piloting the ship.

I assumed you can do this with "mouse look" enabled. However, allowing the view to settle automatically back to centre (there seems to be an option for that) works sometimes, and then randomly when flying with just the hotas, the view wildly moves off when not intended.

Is this?

a) Some interaction with hotas hat controls when mouse look is enabled
b) working as it is meant to be?
c) something else
d) am I getting the wrong end of the stick here?

Hi,
Unbind your flight movement from the mouse.
Then bind the mouse to head look only if you are using a Hotas.

I use the mouse right click as a toggle for head-look and I have the left mouse button set to the PWA for mining (basically fire button one), I just have to remember to cycle the weapons before I use head-look and scan or I inadvertently fire of my collector limpets :)

Having the ability to have a quick look around is very handy.

This is exactly the kind of post I was looking for, I will try this, and hope it works. As far as I know, I'm using almost default settings for hotas with just "head look on" and "recentre option on - can't remember the exact option name" and I can move my head by moving the mouse, and it centres nicely when using hotas until sometimes it suddently goes looking off to the side when all I wanted to do was read a message in local or a wing-message/mission message etc.

Dangerous when in combat too...as you can imagine.

Looks like "headlook / button mode" setting to HOLD is what you need.

This has the disadvantage that you have to take your hands off the stick to manipulate the mouse and thus your viewpoint. I don't know about you but I like to be able to retain full control even if I want to look around. So as well as the mouse headlook I also have headlook toggle on a throttle hat and vewpoint movement on another:

Note - not using axes as use them for thrusters (also not the POV direction label seems daft but that is what they are called).

Of course all the above is moot when I am using TRackIR but sometimes I don't want headtracking in the game.

I left the Axis Mode text up as that is what determines the automatic return to straight ahead I presume.

It is very much a case of what Cmdr. likes what, and we all have different kit to so it could be a very hard question to answer precisely .

What Hotas are you using?

If it's a warthog I'm outta here :)

Did I miss something on this post?
Para's of down the VR route :)

Are you using VR Cmdr. ? or just a Hotas with keyboard with a monitor and you would like to be able to fly safely without bumping your mouse and careening into bulkheads, other ships, Thargoids etc.

Well F*K me Para,
That is a nice throttle, the image is terrible though :) does not give it credit!
No VR, I get it.
so OP Uvelius Sång
what configuration are you using and we'll help you?
