Codex Entry pop-ups?

Sometimes when I arrive at a system, I will start seeing messages appear at the top of the screen with a little golden icon (a book?) stating something like I have discovered some kind of celestial body-type. I think it even happens before I honk the system (not entirely sure on that).

Can anyone expound on this? Why do I get discovery notices like this, without even FSSing the system?

There's an automatic discovery if you are within a certain number of LS of an object, so the primary star, close orbit planets and often asteroid belts, it's something like 50ls, so the primary star will always be found by you when you jump into a system and you will get the codex discovery for that star, and any planets that are close that are new to you.

Also honking discovers any stars in the system without starting the FSS.

Yes, I see the usual ones that come up automatically, but sometimes there's a golden icon next to it. Maybe I'm misremembering.

If it's your first time seeing a particular kind of object in a particular galactic sector you get the special popup. So if you cross a boundary into a galactic sector you haven't been to before you'll get a flurry of codex discovery popups for the first few jumps since it's the first time you're encountering anything there - plain old red dwarfs, rocky planets etc.

If you check the codex for that sector those should then be flagged as things you've seen.

Yes, I think that's it exactly. It seems to happen when I move into a new sector.

But if I may... why? Why is my first anything in an artificial "sector" of the galaxy treated differently?

This seems like a super-legacy artifact.

When the Codex was created the galaxy was divided into sectors "specifically" so that people would get discoveries in various sectors of the galaxy so that they had something to point to as an achievement, I mean people are always asking for achievement badges and etc, these are ED's achievement badges. It has nothing to do with legacy or current, it's part of the function of the codex, which exists regardless of whether you are playing current or legacy, horizons or Odyssey. In fact the codex first discovery bonus for sector and planet both with the old geo and new bio was extended and applied to Odyssey, which legacy players can't access, so it appears very much like this is an ongoing feature of ED no matter what version you are playing.

I’d never really thought about codex entries until the other day when moving into a new area and everything started popping up. It occurred to me that, perhaps due to ignorance or old age, I didn’t really know what constituted/defined an area for new codex entries.

In the back of my mind I always sort of thought the codex ‘areas’ were based on ‘regions’ (i.e. Temple, Vulcan Gate etc.) and not sectors within regions (maybe boxels?). But, having said that, and briefly checking my logs, there are inconsistences with both assumptions. I suppose my ‘inconsistences’ may be due to sectors overlapping region borders.

Anyway I came across this thread whilst in curious search mode. It’s not worth sweating over, but would simply be interested in what others think or know……

If you fire up the galaxy map and zoom out you can see the lines demarcating the various region borders, but keep in mind these are FDEV's region designations, there are older designations that players made way back before the Codex that were not included or followed as part of these regions. Boxels are the way the galaxies stars are distributed by the stellar forge and it's quite likely that some of the larger boxels actually cross two regions so boxels can be ignored in this context.
