Codex question

Hi

My understanding is the codex will be like a journal which unlocks info as we do different parts of the game.

If this is true will it start from scratch when the update goes live or are FD already recording the info somewhere just not accessible to us right now?

For instance 12 months ago I scanned all the logs at Dave hope and 2 weeks ago I did all 101 scans of ram fab mission. Will these be unlocked in my codex?

Thanks

It would be nice to think so, but I doubt if anyone outside of FDev actually knows. But stuff like Dav's Hope gives you a persistent planetary marker, so it must be recorded somewhere in your profile.

When we got the visited stars mechanic, bodies visited before that time were not included. Expect whatever is cheapest or easiest to implement. It's FD!

I still don't have a clue what codex is or how it helps anyone. It sounds like some ancient tablet you would find burried under a pyramid or something. Is this game jargon for something more comprehensible?

A lot of stuff we have done is already recorded in the journal, so they may get a lot of the information from there.

Think of it a bit like this.

I don't mind redoing all the stuff(INRA bases, Thargoid sites, Guardian sites and Dav's Hope etc) as long as the Ram Tah missions get updated since they took ages to complete.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone inside FD actually knows.
For a completely new feature, this close to a soon to be launched public beta, CODEX has flown suspicously low under the radar.

FD's already keeping track of a lot. If you scanned the beacons at many places you have a nav contact for that location. I don't doubt some things may be missed but I suspect a lot will already be there.

I thought FDev said it would be pre-populated with what you've done already in a previous discussion about it?

Visited planets have been on the server since launch. Otherwise, when you reinstalled the game after changing rigs/OS etc etc, you would be able to honk and get 'New Discoveries' on your scanner again. No idea how much other info is stored though.

One of the NDA limited comments was "it will be great for BGS"
I never thought it would be of any use to BGS which leads me to entirely guess:
1) It will be your own personally gathered INARA - Which is utterly pointless, as the main reason for INARA is other peoples data.
2) It will give up to date info on anywhere you have visited - Which would be a BGS godsend, even if there is no Lore rational for it.

It's a really good question and one which, stupidly, I don't know the answer too (smacks forehead, "why didn't I ask that question last week!").

There have been a couple of official announcements. From the elite dangerous wikia:

Game Director Laurence Oldham said, "The codex will log your discoveries and the things that you've found, but will also act as a kind of encyclopedia so giving more depth and context to the things that you've found and also possibly hinting at other things that you might be able to find out there."

Sandro Sammarco said, "We will add a Codex in the fourth chapter of Beyond that will keep track of pilots’ exploration achievements and offer more context and data on discoveries. It’s like an in-game encyclopedia and filling it will be a lot of fun. The codex will also hint at additional sites to explore based on previously visited locations and will offer a personal narrative to complement each commander’s play style."

Personally, I'm hoping for less journal and more encyclopedia.
