Powerplay Collapsing mechanic.

So far we have read that once a faction collapses, a new faction will be put in it's place. What would be the purpose of that when the players in the collapsed system will probably go to a more established power than going to the new one? The new one will probably be more weak than the one it replaced.

Depends.

RP players might favour smaller powers as its a challenge.

Merit grinders after the new module will go wherever is easiest, and that is normally the largest powers.

The replacement would be either a new dev created NPC power that would at least be different from the old one...with perks that might be better..or a storyline that players would support more, OR a player group that would move up in to Powerplay..bringing along a cadre of dedicated supporters.

I am guessing by the time a power collapses, the players in PP would be that more rooted in their current power than join the new one. If the perks are the best, then they have to get better every time a power collapses.

I understood, that if a power drops to the lowest on the list, another power; so far unknown, will rise to take its place in the list. This does not dictate 'where' that power is situated within the galaxy, just that it is a contender for the top ten powers list.

Or people could move for RP reasons/ wanting a challenge/ wanting to be more influence in small power rather than a cog in a huge machine. Instead of just playing for credits or min maxing.

That said, I hope FD do a balance pass at some point on PP as the benefits and modules are a mess.

I don't think that reason would be sufficient based on the way PP is right now. Take Torval for instance. Most of PZN have said we would all go separate ways if Torval collapsed. Nobody have said they would join the new power.

Well it's probably quite hard to decide if you'd pledge to a new power if you don't know what it is yet. As it is I don't imagine many in PZN pledged to Granny Torval for the great bonuses, as there are none.

Ultimately it'll come down to the individuals and their ties to their fellows as to what they will do. Some people will always be lured to the most powerful rewards, others to the greatest challenge, others will have their own reasons be they RP or whatever.

Besides with a new power, maybe some people who are currently uninspired with PP factions will like the new one and take part, maybe some existing players or groups will like the concept of the new power and leave their current one. I think it's too complicated a situation to say now "there's no point in adding new powers as not many will join them".
