"Collector Limpet expired"³

Shoot the asteroid, deploy the limpet, "collector limpet expired", rinse and repeat.
What am I doing wrong, it seems the poor things are suicidal at best and really useless at the worst...

Any advice for me?

Are you targeting the fragments when you launch a limpet? Because if you do, it will only collect that fragment and then immediately expire. If you don't target a fragment, the limpet will collect everything in range for a set period of time (up to 12 minutes with the 3A collector module).

Also, if you're moving, the limpets will crash into your ship as they attempt to drop off the fragments at your cargo hatch - they take damage and eventually just die (you can hear them scrape against your hull). So you need to just sit there while your limpets do their thing. To speed things up, you can install more than one limpet controller, allowing you to launch more limpet drones simultaneously.

I have very few problems using the collector limpets - they actually make mining fun.

I mine in a Clipper, with 4 (four!) active drones. Class A equipment.

If you use those in area collect mode (no target selected when firing a drone) they last ~10 minutes.

Yes, they sometimes collide with the asteroid, but it works OK for the most part. I need ~50 limpets to fill my cargo hold (200 cargo).

see you out there,
Commander Benderson

I'm currently mining in an Asp, but was thinking of upgrading to a clipper. Would you recommend it for mining and what is your loadout?

God damn, that's really dumb xD OK so I DON'T target and then they won't explode immediately - really counter intuitive to say the least ^^
Thank you very much, I thought I'll go crazy with those little buggers.

I'd say if you can afford the clipper go straight to the Python - those medium landing pads are SO useful ^^

It uses undersized shield. 9 bin refinery is enough even if you are not picky. I usually just du 'bulk' mining and am not picky. Just scoop up whatever comes along.
With 4 drones they basically collect at the speed the class 2 laser mines them.

have fun,

Thanks, that's really useful. Personally I'm quite picky. I head out to a pristine metallic ring and only bother with painite, platinum, palladium, gold, beryllium, and, depending on my mood, osmium. Everything else I just vent. This way I make between 0.75-1.5million per hour, but I'm not sure how efficient that is (that's with 80T of cargo space).

I'm in the same range, money-per-hour-wise. 200to cargo do need some time to get full.

I have yet to find a pristine metallic ring with a resource extraction site, the system I'm at does have a station (can't land at outposts), so I mine pristine metallic without the added res bonus.

I figure the money is OK, i'm playing the game for fun not for money-making, and I find mining to be very immersive and relaxing. But then, I'm a space buff, I love being 'out there'.

I don't bother going to a RES, I just SC to a random spot in a pristine metallic ring - I like the quiet solitude and not being bothered by NPCs! Like you, I find mining quite relaxing and a welcome diversion from pew pewing in my vulture.
